Scott-Ellis big for Cougars in triple jump and long jump

Stephan Scott-Ellis led Washington State with 14 points, taking third place in the triple jump (50 feet, 10 1/4 inches) and second in the in the long jump (24-4 3/4), as the Cougars’ men’s track and field team took seventh at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor track and field championships Saturday in Seattle.

WSU’s Jeshua Anderson added 13 points for the Cougars, taking second in the 400-meter dash with a time 47.13 seconds.

Leading the WSU women was Ruby Roberts, who finished in a time of 4:50.25 in the mile run. Her eighth-place finish made her the lone WSU woman to score on the track Saturday.

Stanford won the men’s team title with 107.5 points, beating out Arizona’s 102 points and UCLA’s 82.5.

Oregon took the women’s championship with 138 points, followed closely by Arizona, which had 128.

Washington State placed ninth with 16 points.

• Idaho’s Markus Geiger followed up a title-winning performance in the 5,000-meter run Friday with a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters to be named top track performer at the Western Athletic Conference indoor championships in Nampa.

For his efforts, Geiger was named WAC men’s co-track performer of the year, leading the Vandals to a fourth-place finish in the team scoring with 69 points.

Jeremy Klas helped Idaho with his second consecutive indoor pole vault title, clearing 17 feet, 1 inch to beat the field by nearly a foot.

The UI women were led by Hannah Kiser and Liga Velvere, who took championships in the 3,000-meter run and 800, respectively.

The Vandals scored 44 points, finishing eighth in the team scoring.

• Eastern Washington junior Brad Wall broke a school record in the 400-meter run with a time of 47.58 seconds, winning the event over Northern Arizona’s Adel al Nasser, the favorite leading up to the event at the Big Sky Conference indoor championships in Pocatello.

Wall, along with Kyle King – who placed first in the 5,000 (15:23.63) and third in the 3,000 (8:24.41) – helped push the Eagles to a fifth-place finish in the team scoring. Sacramento State edged out NAU for the championship, 133-132.5.

The EWU women were eighth wth 45.5 points as Sacramento State made it a sweep with a women’s title, scoring 144 points.

Erica Chaney was the leader for the Eagles, placing second in the shot put with a mark of 47 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Friday, she earned the title in the weight throw with a distance of 57-1 3/4.

Baseball

Adam Conley fired six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine as Washington State took the opener against Santa Barbara 5-1 in nonconference action in Pullman.

The Cougars (4-1) made it a sweep of the Gauchos with a 7-3 victory in the second game, led by Cody Bartlett’s three-run double in the third inning.

• Michael Wacha went seven innings and allowed no runs on five hits as Texas A&M (6-0) held off Gonzaga (0-5) 4-2 in College Station, Texas.

Trailing 4-0 in the eighth, the Bulldogs pushed two runs across but could get closer and dropped their fifth straight.

Softball

Alyssa Erickson pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win in the first game and Cardinal bats homered five times in the nightcap as North Idaho (18-10, 11-6) pounded out a pair of wins against Western Nevada (2-9, 2-9), 14-0 and 15-2 in SWAC play in Fernley, Nev.

Shelby Gonzalez homered twice in the second game, finishing with four RBIs.

• Stacy Doucette and Emily Keagbine each homered and No. 1 Linfield (2-0, 2-0) swept Whitworth (2-6, 0-2) 12-2, 10-1 in Northwest Conference play in McMinnville, Ore.
