Sunday Locals: Shadle Park girls repeat as state bowling champs
Led by 2010 champion Shadle Park, which successfully defended its girls division title, Spokane-area schools were dominate in the 46th annual Washington State Bowling Proprietors Association state high school Varsity Bowling Championships last weekend in Spokane.
Area schools won two of the four divisions, had two individual champions, two of the four most valuable player selections and 18 bowlers earn all-state recognition in the tournament contested at Lilac Lanes (team event) and North Bowl (singles).
Not only did Shadle win the four-team girls division for the second straight year, but Cheney finished second, and North Central won Division II in the boys competition with Deer Park third, Cheney fourth and Mt. Spokane seventh.
In boys Division I, Moses Lake was second, Shadle Park fourth and West Valley seventh. Oak Harbor won the division. Shorewood won Division III in which there were no area schools.
In singles events, Nikalas Gosselin of Rogers was the boys Division A winner and Heather Lundgren of Mead won the girls Division A. Alex Paschal of Woodinville won boys B and Meagan Turner of Shorecrest girls B.
MVPs included Kaley Burchett of Shadle in the girls division and Jesse Covington of NC in boys Division II.
Additionally, Shadle, coached by Gary Snyder and John Gately, and NC, coached by former Indians bowler Alex Earle, won Don Peek Inspirational team awards, which are voted on by the bowlers, for their divisions. Moses Lake won the award in boys Division I and Bellarmine Prep in boys Division III.

Boys Division I: First team – Nathan Rawley, Shadle; Cody Hurley, WV; Aaron Johnson, Moses Lake. Second team – Patrick Latrail, Shadle; Nelson Day, Shadle.
Boys Division II: First team – Covington; Taylor Gamble, Deer Park; Jalen Hines, Mt. Spokane. Second team – Dakota Torkelson, Cheney; Brandon Dixon, Cheney; Robbie Winchell, NC; Tyler Sumpter, Mt. Spokane.
College scene
Angie Bjorklund, a Tennessee senior from University High School, has been named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-America women’s basketball second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Bjorklund, who has a 3.63 grade-point average in psychology, is a repeat selection in the University Division. Last season she was named to the first team.
Bjorklund is the Lady Vols’ career leader in 3-pointers made (284) and attempted (707), and has a career scoring average of 11.3. She is averaging 10.9 and shooting 39.7 percent from 3-point range this season.
• Felix Friedt, a Whitworth junior from Düsseldorf, Germany, has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-America men’s basketball college division third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
An international business major, Friedt has 3.96 a grade-point average. He had been the top vote-getter from among more than 50 college-division nominees for the Academic All-District VIII team.
• Denise Van de Mortel of Gonzaga and Brittany Tillman and Megan Ganzer of Washington State are among 208 athletes invited to participate in open tryouts for U.S. women’s national volleyball teams this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Van de Mortel is a junior setter, Tillman a senior middle blocker and Ganzer a junior outside hitter.
The players are trying for spots on the U.S. Women’s National Team, U.S. Women’s National A2 Program and U.S. Women’s Junior National Team. Invited from 81 colleges were 57 outside hitters, 52 middle blockers, 46 liberos, 27 setters and 26 opposites.
• Idaho junior Barry Britt placed fourth at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships last weekend in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, helping lead Canada to a second-place team finish.
Britt covered the 8,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 53.8 seconds, second on the Canadian senior men’s squad.
“My race went much better than I expected – kind of a best-case scenario for me,” Britt said. “I just kind of locked in with the lead guy and tried to hang with him as long as I could. I hung tough for the first 7K and then the top three guys kind of broke free.”
By virtue of the second-place finish, Canada is eligible to compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships March 20, at Punta Umbria, Spain. Britt said Athletics Canada hasn’t decided yet if it will send a full team to the world meet.
• Casey Hampton, a senior at Lewis-Clark State from Bonners Ferry, has qualified for the NAIA national outdoor meet in the women’s marathon after placing fourth in the half marathon at the 11th annual Lost Dutchman Marathon in Apache Junction, Ariz., last Sunday.
Hampton was timed in 1 hour, 34 minutes, 42 seconds over the 13.1-mile course, which placed her fourth among the women and 33rd among all runners. She is the first Warrior this season to qualify for the NAIA outdoor track and field championships in May.
Cross country
Keaton Trom, a senior at Post Falls, has signed a letter of intent to run for the Lewis-Clark State College men, Warriors coach Mike Collins announced.
Trom was the No. 2 runner for Post Falls this past season and competed in the Idaho State 5A meet, where the Trojans placed 10th. He also ran for the Trojans’ track team and placed 14th in the 800 meters at state as junior.
Football
Riley Schell, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound offensive tackle for Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia who lives in Farmington, has signed a letter of intent with Carroll College, Saints coach Mike Van Diest announced.
Schell, who Van Diest said “is very athletic … the type of offensive tackle we were looking for,” was a four-year letter-winner who was named All-Southeast 2B League and All-State. He was team captain, a member of the National Honor Society and has been named Academic All-State. He carries a 3.55 GPA.
Soccer
Shannon Lindsay, a 5-foot-8 defender at Gonzaga Prep, has signed a national letter of intent with Montana, first-year Grizzlies coach Mark Plakorus announced.
Lindsay, a four-year varsity starter for the Bullpups, earned Washington 4A All-State honorable mention and first-team All-Greater Spokane League honors as a senior. She has Olympic Development Program experience in both Washington and Idaho.
She began her club career with River City in Spokane, helping the program’s U-16 team to a regional championship in 2008 and a spot at the national tournament. She has since been playing for Washington Premier out of Seattle. The team won the U-18 Gold Division at the 2010 Surf Cup last summer.
Track and field
Johnathan Murray, a Coeur d’Alene High School senior throwing for Hammer Idaho, was seventh in the 25-pound weight throw at the Simplot Games held at Idaho State University in Pocatello on Feb. 17.
Murray’s throw of 60 feet, 6.25 inches “was a personal best by more than 3 feet. This was an outstanding performance … in the nation’s premier indoor high school track and field event,” said Hammer Idaho coach George Mathews.
Mathews said there were 31 athletes from 10 states and Canada, including what he called “the powerhouse hammer club Throw 1 Deep from Georgia” in the event. Throw 1 Deep had the top five finishers.
Miscellany
Oliver Pierce, Gonzaga University assistant athletic director/sports information director since 1989, has been selected as the recipient of the Katha Quinn Award by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
The award, which annually goes to individuals who provide exceptional service to the basketball-covering media, is named in memory of a former St. John’s University sports information director who died of cancer in 1988.
“Oliver has garnered a solid reputation with the media through the years,” USBWA executive director Joe Mitch said. “He has been there from the beginning in Gonzaga’s rise from a respected regional program to one with a consistent national presence.”
Pierce, a native of Spokane and 1971 graduate of Lewis and Clark who also served as the assistant SID at his alma mater, Washington State, from 1977-85, will be honored at the USBWA’s awards breakfast held in conjunction with the men’s NCAA Final Four in Houston on April 4.
