Your week

YOUR HEALTH

Eating a diet rich in fiber has long been known to help keep your digestive tract working properly and lower the risk of heart disease, some cancers and diabetes.

Now, a new study suggests it also could reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular, infectious and respiratory diseases.

People who ate a high-fiber diet – at least 26 grams per day – decreased their risk of dying by 22 percent over a nine-year period compared to those who ate 13 grams or less, according to research by the National Institutes of Health and AARP published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Foods such as raspberries, lentils, peas, barley and oat bran are packed with fiber. For more information, go to http://fnic.nal.usda.gov/, click on Consumer Corner on the right, then on Eating for Health, and then Fiber.

YOUR HOME

GE is giving new meaning to wash and wear.

The GE Profile steam washer has an Overnight Ready cycle that lets you leave your laundry in the washer and dries it so it will be ready in the morning.

The cycle keeps the clothes moving gently for up to eight hours and uses fans to remove moisture. It’s meant for small loads, although how many garments you can dry depends on the fabric.

The clothes won’t be any more wrinkled than if they were dried on a clothesline, the company says.

The GE Profile front-load washer with steam has a suggested retail price of $1,499.
