Flyers end 22-year drought

NHL: James van Riemsdyk, Daniel Carcillo and Scott Hartnell scored to help the Philadelphia Flyers win for the first time in Detroit in more than 22 years, 3-2 over the Red Wings on Sunday.

Philadelphia was 0-14-2 at Joe Louis Arena since Nov. 4, 1988.

Brian Boucher made 25 saves for Philadelphia.

Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped 24 shots before being pulled in favor of Chris Osgood to start the third period. Osgood made five saves.

• Byfuglien’s OT goal leads Thrashers over Canadiens: Dustin Byfuglien scored his third overtime goal of the season on a power-play at 3:43 of the extra session, and Ondrej Pavelec made 47 saves in the visiting Atlanta Thrashers’ 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Tobias Enstrom got his third assist on Byfuglien’s winner.

Rich Peverley, Evander Kane and Andrew Ladd scored in regulation for the Thrashers.

Montreal captain Brian Gionta scored with 4:47 left in the third to tie it at 3.

• Vokoun makes 32 saves, Panthers beat Rangers: In Sunrise, Fla., Tomas Vokoun made 32 saves for his fifth shutout of the season and 43rd overall, and David Booth, Chris Higgins and Stephen Weiss scored in the Florida Panthers’ 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers.

Aldridge, Batum help Blazers beat Rockets

NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points and 11 rebounds, Nicolas Batum added a season-high 21 points and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the visiting Houston Rockets 100-85.

Patrick Mills had a career-high 14 points, five assists and five steals for Portland. Wesley Matthews added 14 and Marcus Camby had 13 rebounds and season-high eight assists.

Kevin Martin had 15 points to lead the Rockets.

• Celtics win in Rondo’s return: Paul Pierce scored 30 points, Ray Allen had 23 and the visiting Boston Celtics beat the Toronto Raptors 93-79.

Glenn Davis added 15 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Rajon Rondo scored four points and handed out eight assists in his first game back since missing seven games with a sprained ankle. DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points and Joey Dorsey had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors.

• Butler could have torn knee tendon: Caron Butler could be out at least a couple of months because of a knee injury suffered Saturday, a tough blow for the already ailing Dallas Mavericks.

A person with direct knowledge said the initial diagnosis is a torn patellar tendon. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team was awaiting MRI exam results before making any announcements.

Muschamp’s Florida staff taking shape

College Football: A day after landing former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator, the Gators have hired receivers coach Aubrey Hill and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson. Florida also has retained three current assistants. New head coach Will Muschamp is keeping running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Stan Drayton, linebackers coach/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin and tight ends coach Brian White.

Muschamp already said he’s retaining strength and conditioning coordinator Mickey Marotti.

• South Carolina WR Gurley enters NFL draft: South Carolina redshirt sophomore receiver Tori Gurley is headed for the NFL draft.

Gurley told ESPN that he plans to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL. He posted messages confirming the news on his Twitter and Facebook page.

Gurley caught 44 passes for 465 yards and four touchdowns this season for the Gamecocks.

Pietilae-Holmner, Kostelic win parallel

Miscellany: Ivica Kostelic of Croatia and Maria Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden won the first parallel slaloms in the World Cup in Munich.

Kostelic, a slalom specialist, beat Julien Lizeroux of France over two heats in the big final by a total of 1.61 seconds.

In the women’s big final, Pietilae-Holmner trailed Tina Maze of Slovenia but came back to win by 0.47 seconds.

• Orioles’ Alfredo Simon is main suspect in killing: Police say Baltimore Orioles pitcher Alfredo Simon is the main suspect in a fatal shooting in the Dominican Republic.

Dominican police said in a statement they believe Simon shot and killed 25-year-old Michel Castillo Almonte and wounded his 17-year-old brother during a New Year’s Eve dispute.

• Notre Dame women beat SE Missouri State: In South Bend, Ind., No. 16 Notre Dame scored the first 36 points of the game en route to an easy 97-21 win over Southeast Missouri State.

The 21 points was the fewest the school ever has allowed, eclipsing the 25 points against Grace College in 1978.

Southeast Missouri State (5-9) missed its first 18 shots and got its first basket, a 3-pointer by Katie Norman with 5:20 to go in the first half.

• Kansas hires Zenger as athletic director: Kansas has hired Sheahon Zenger as athletic director.

Zenger had been athletic director at Illinois State. The announcement was made in a release by Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little.
