Here’s the Dirt: Deaconess renovates for Rockwood staff
Top-to-bottom modernization and build-out projects worth about $7 million are under way at Deaconess Medical Center as the South Hill complex readies more space for Rockwood Clinic doctors and staff.
In the basement of the Deaconess Health and Education Center, a 13,880-pound, $1.5 million MRI unit has replaced a smaller, less-powerful unit, Chief Operating Officer Greg Repetti said. Getting the smaller machine out and the larger unit in entailed the temporary removal of a portion of foundation wall, work that has blocked Fifth Avenue.
On the eighth and ninth floors, Repetti said, crews are converting space that has been vacant.
He said the ninth floor will house Rockwood’s Heart and Vascular Center. Completion of that project is expected by mid-spring, he said.
One floor down, crews are breaking the 20,000 square feet of space into quarters for the clinic’s urology and general surgery practices. That phase of construction should be completed sometime this summer.
Both build-outs will cost about $2 million, Repetti said.
Meanwhile, in the nearby patient tower, a $1 million remodeling of the 34-bed cardiac step-down unit should be ready for occupancy by April, he said.
And space is also being cleared for a small bariatrics unit in another part of the complex, spokeswoman Julie Holland said.
Miller Paint to open second store
Portland-based Miller Paint will open its second Spokane store in the former Blockbuster Video building at 2501 E. 29th Ave.
It will take about 4,000 square feet, or two-thirds, of the building, said area manager Byron Nelson. The company will lease from property owner Stanek Enterprises.
He said it should open during the first two weeks of March. Miller Paint has a store in downtown Spokane.
The employee-owned company has about eight locations in the Seattle area and about 36 across the Northwest. Nelson said the goal is to have five or six in the Inland Northwest, he said. About four workers will staff the new store, he added.
Dave Black, of NAI Black of Spokane, was the broker for the lease and the deal.
An unnamed retailer is lined up for the remaining one-third of the store.
Businesses get to The Pointe
Two Spokane businesses, architect Denny Christenson & Associates and McCloskey Construction Inc., have moved into new offices at The Pointe, a $3.6 million, 15,000-square-foot building at 9708 N. Nevada St.
McCloskey was the general contractor and Christenson was the designer of the two-level-with-basement building.
Other tenants include periodontist Dr. Steven Aeschliman and dentist Dr. Ashley Ulmer, who moved in when the building was finished last summer.
Kevin Edwards, leasing agent for owner NorthPointe Ventures, LLC, said the top level, with roughly 6,000 square feet, is still available.
Yogurt place opened last month
Chill Spot Frozen Yogurt & More has opened at 2706 N. Monroe St. It offers self-serve frozen yogurt, panini sandwiches and espresso beverages. Owner Rick Purcell opened the shop in December, filling the vacated site of Monroe Espresso and Deli.
