Traded The Chicago Cubs acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday in an eight-player trade. Garza joins the Cubs along with outfielder Fernando Perez and left-hander Zachary Rosscup. The Rays get two of the Cubs’ top prospects, right- hander Chris Archer, a 15-game winner in two minor league stops last season, and 20-year-old shortstop Hak-Ju Lee. Also going from Chicago to Tampa Bay are catcher Robinson Chirinos and outfielders Sam Fuld and Brandon Guyer.

Extended Florida State extended Jimbo Fisher’s contract for one year, taking the head football coach through the 2015 season. Fisher will make $2.75 million a year for five years.

Sidelined Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby remains bothered by a concussion and will not resume practicing or playing until he is symptom-free. Crosby was held out of the pregame skate before the Penguins’ 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild, the second straight game he has missed. The NHL’s leading scorer also isn’t expected to play Monday against Boston or Wednesday at Montreal.

• Dallas Mavericks top scorer Dirk Nowitzki missed his seventh straight game with a sprained right knee when he was inactive for a 117-107 loss to the Orlando Magic. Nowitzki attempted to run at practice on Thursday, but he experienced pain and was told by the team’s medical staff to shut down the workout.

Considering Five-time Olympic gold medalist Ian Thorpe is back training in the pool and hasn’t ruled out a return to competition in time for the London 2012 Olympics. Dave Flaskas, manager for the 28-year- old swimmer said to be eligible for the London Games, Thorpe would have to begin drug-testing in the next six to eight weeks to make him eligible a year out from the Australian trials.

Believed Family members have said they believe a brother of Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed is the man who jumped into the Mississippi River as he ran from police after he was spotted in a parked car that matched the description of a stolen vehicle. Karen Reed, the mother of Ed and Brian Reed, said investigators found 28-year-old Brian Reed’s shoes and jacket after a St. Charles Parish (La.) Sheriff’s deputy told him to put his hands behind his back and he fled the scene.
