Unnamed athlete focus of sexual assault case

SEATTLE – A Seattle television station says police are investigating a 16-year-old girl’s report that she was raped by a well-known University of Washington athlete after the two met on Facebook.
KIRO-TV cites police documents as saying the girl alleges she was raped when the two met up Saturday night.
Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel told the Associated Press that he can confirm “an active and ongoing sexual assault investigation.” He added it is police policy not to release the names of suspects until they are arrested, booked or charged.
A statement from the University of Washington athletics department said it has learned of “a police investigation based on allegations surrounding a current UW student-athlete.” Beyond that, the statement said neither the university nor members of the UW men’s basketball coaching staff or team planned any comment.
