War effort paying off
As a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan, I am compelled to respond to Mr. Schwandt’s letter (Jan. 6) stating the toll of these wars is too high.
While entering Iraq in 2003, I interacted with countless Iraqi civilians who appreciated our presence as liberators. Our effort led to the deposition of one of the most tyrannical dictators in recent history and has given hope to an oppressed people.
In Afghanistan, a sanctuary for terrorists and radical Islam, we are fighting to prevent the youth and poor in that country from being used in attacks against both moderate Muslims and the West. As an infantry officer, I was responsible for training and patrolling with a battalion of border police. Through daily interaction, I saw the strength of their resolve. When I left the country last year, huge steps had been made in preparing them for the day America can withdraw, but it will take time and patience on the part of the American people.
The 5,880 service members who have died have helped improve the lives of millions, and although the deaths are tragic they are not in vain, and our world is a safer place thanks to their sacrifices.
