CV, U-Hi continue to lead GSL wrestling

Kurt Beck overcame a 4-0 third-period deficit to pin Tommy Weed as Central Valley stayed tied for first place in Greater Spokane League wrestling with a 35-27 win at Ferris (2-4).

Jace Gummersal of CV (6-0) began the night with a 4-0 win over Tyler Kimbrell. Ben Miller (112) and Kaleb Richardson (119) had back-to-back pins for the Saxons.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Jason Thrapp (171) edged Jackson Schumaker 9-8 as University (6-0) kept pace with CV with a 52-13 win at Lewis and Clark. Tanner Thomas of the Tigers (2-4) got a late takedown at 189 to defeat Sam Byers 3-1. … Freshman Grover Escobar pinned junior Jerry Dillon early in the third period at 135 to help Shadle Park (2-4) to a 47-24 win over visiting Rogers (0-6). Terrence McKinney (112) and Conner Kerr (119) added technical-fall wins for the Highlanders. Dwayne Robinson (215) had one of the Pirates’ three pins. … Sam Wilkes (145) had a pin with 21 seconds left and Billy Goforth (152) followed with a 15-0 technical fall to help Mt. Spokane (4-2) polish off a 54-15 win at Gonzaga Prep (0-6), which had five forfeits.

Great Northern League: Nick Gonzalez (160) and Matthew Mastronardi (171) ended the night with pins to cap East Valley’s 50-24 win at West Valley (1-2). WV jumped to a 9-0 lead before Bodee Hart’s 27-second pin at 103 helped the Knights rally. At 140, WV’s Luke Konzal had a pair of third-period takedowns to defeat Cody Chapman 10-7.

Gymnastics

Ferris scored a season-best 147.45 points to hold off Mt. Spokane (144.75) and win a five-team GSL meet at Rogers. Shadle Park’s Alana Norman won the uneven bars (8.5) and vault (9.1) on the way to the all-around title at 35.225. Mt. Spokane’s Courtney Bray finished second in the all-around at 35.05 after winning the balance beam (9.25) and floor exercise (9.325).

Girls basketball

Marah Ashcraft scored 20 points to lead Kellogg (5-7) to a 44-17 nonleague win over visiting Wallace (5-6).
