In brief: Seminoles end No. 1 Duke’s long streak

College basketball: Derwin Kitchen scored 22 points and Florida State pulled off its latest upset of No. 1 Duke, snapping the Blue Devils’ 25-game winning streak with a 66-61 victory Wednesday night at Tallahassee, Fla.

Chris Singleton added 18 points for Florida State (12-5, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which made five free throws in the final 33 seconds to hold off the defending national champions. It was the third time since 2002 that the Seminoles beat a top-ranked Duke team at home.

“We came together tonight,” Singleton said. “It just feels good. If we can beat them, we can beat anybody.”

The Blue Devils (15-1, 2-1) hadn’t lost since a 79-72 setback on March 3, 2010, at Maryland. The 25-game streak was the second longest in Duke history.

“Their defense just dominated our offense for about 25 minutes in the ballgame,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

• No. 5 Pitt pounds Georgetown: Ashton Gibbs hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points, and No. 5 Pittsburgh (16-1, 4-0 Big East) broke open the game early and rolled to a 72-57 win over No. 22 Georgetown (12-5, 1-4) at Washington.

• Buckeyes hold off Michigan: William Buford scored 19 points and No. 2 Ohio State (17-0, 4-0 Big Ten) went on a 12-0 run in the second half before holding on for a 68-64 win over Michigan (11-6, 1-3) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

• No. 3 Kansas hold on: Marcus Morris had career highs with 33 points and 13 rebounds and No. 3 Kansas (16-0, 1-0 Big 12) held off Iowa State (13-4, 0-2) 84-79 at Ames, Iowa, to win its 20th straight conference opener.

• Villanova rolls to 10th straight win: Corey Stokes scored 23 points to lead No. 7 Villanova (15-1, 4-0 Big East) to its 10th straight win, 88-74 over No. 18 Louisville (13-3, 2-1) at Philadelphia.

• Aztecs now have longest streak: Kawhi Leonard had 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, and Malcolm Thomas also had a double-double as undefeated and sixth-ranked San Diego State (18-0, 3-0 Mountain West,) beat UNLV (13-4, 1-2) 55-49. The Aztecs’ school-record 18-game streak is the longest current winning streak in the nation.

• Mbakwe offers apology: Trevor Mbakwe apologized for distracting his Minnesota teammates after his arrest for allegedly violating a restraining order against him by sending a Facebook message to a former girlfriend.

Thunder finally break though in Houston

NBA: Kevin Durant scored 30 points, Russell Westbrook added 23 points and 13 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped the franchise’s 11-game losing streak in Houston with a 118-112 win over the Rockets.

• Jazz outshoot Knicks: Deron Williams and reserve C.J. Miles scored 24 points apiece, leading seven Utah players in double figures as the Jazz beat the New York Knicks 131-125 at Salt Lake City.

• Hornets end Orlando’s streak: Emeka Okafor had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and the host New Orleans Hornets held off Orlando 92-89 in overtime, snapping the Magic’s nine-game winning streak.

Griner helps No. 1 Baylor in other ways

Women’s basketball: Brittney Griner fought through a tough shooting night to score 27 points and lead No. 1 Baylor (15-1, 2-0 Big 12) to an 87-72 win over Texas (11-5, 0-2) at Austin, Texas.

Defending champs figure out Avalanche

NHL: Corey Crawford made 24 saves for his second straight shutout and Dave Bolland and Fernando Pisani had a goal and an assist apiece to lead the host Chicago Blackhawks past the Colorado Avalanche 4-0.

Achilles injury sidelines Woody
