Keep lifeline intact
Gandhi, Hubert Humphrey, Pope John Paul II and others have long noted a society is judged by its treatment of its weakest, most vulnerable members. We will surely be judged harshly if the Washington Legislature listens to you.
Your Jan. 8 editorial suggests Washington’s Disability Lifeline program is too generous because, with this program, “Washington has gone well beyond what other states do.” Today this program provides $266 per month to people who must first prove they are both desperately poor and medically disabled.
No matter what other states do, eliminating the Disability Lifeline program as you propose is simply inhumane. Let’s hope the Legislature finds its moral compass elsewhere.
