In brief: Aztecs top Lobos to run record to 19-0

College basketball: D.J. Gay scored a career-high 30 points, Kawhi Leonard had 19 points and 15 rebounds and No. 6 San Diego State beat New Mexico 87-77 on Saturday night in Albuquerque, N.M., to remain one of the nation’s four unbeaten teams.

Chase Tapley added 15 points and the Aztecs (19-0, 4-0 Mountain West Conference) won for the fourth time in their last six visits to The Pit to extend the country’s longest active win streak to a school-record 19 games.

The Lobos (13-5, 1-2) got a strong performance from UCLA transfer Drew Gordon, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds.

• Aggies nip Tigers in OT: Khris Middleton scored 28 points, including 11 in overtime, and No. 14 Texas A&M (16-1, 3-0 Big 12) beat 15th-ranked Missouri (15-3, 1-2) 91-89 in College Station, Texas, for its 13th straight win.

• Buckeyes hold off Nittany Lions: Jared Sullinger scored 19 points and tallied a three-point play with 13.2 seconds left to lift No. 2 Ohio State (18-0, 5-0 Big Ten) to a 69-66 victory over Penn State (10-7, 3-3) in Columbus, Ohio.

• Blue Devils bounce back: Nolan Smith scored 29 points and No. 1 Duke (16-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) bounced back from its first loss in 10 months by pulling away for a 76-60 win over Virginia (10-7, 1-2) in Durham, N.C.

• Badgers upset Illini: Jon Leuer scored 26 points and hit a critical 3-pointer down the stretch as No. 20 Wisconsin (13-4, 3-2 Big Ten) posted a 76-66 win over No. 16 Illinois (13-5, 3-2) in Madison, Wis.

• Jayhawks slip past Cornhuskers: Marcus Morris and Tyrel Reed hit free throws in the final seconds and No. 3 Kansas (17-0, 2-0 Big 12) erased a 10-point second-half deficit to remain unbeaten with a 63-60 victory over Nebraska (13-4, 1-2) in Lawrence, Kan.

• Wildcats rally past Terrapins: Corey Fisher scored eight of his 17 points during a stunning 19-0 second-half run that helped No. 7 Villanova (16-1) avoid an upset and win its 11th straight game, 74-66 over Maryland (11-6) in Philadelphia.

• Orange remain unbeaten: Rick Jackson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season and fourth-ranked Syracuse (18-0, 5-0 Big East) remained unbeaten with a 67-52 victory over No. 25 Cincinnati (16-2, 3-2) in Syracuse, N.Y.

• Cardinals escape upset bid: Kyle Kuric’s layup with 4 seconds left capped a 24-5 run by No. 18 Louisville (14-3, 3-1 Big East) and the Cardinals stunned Marquette (12-6, 3-2) 71-70 in Louisville, Ky.

• Dukes stun Owls: Bill Clark had 22 points and Duquesne (11-5, 3-0 Atlantic 10) limited No. 19 Temple (12-4, 3-1) to 31 percent shooting in winning its sixth consecutive game, 78-66 in Pittsburgh.

Grizzlies spoil Nowitzki’s return

NBA: Zach Randolph had 23 points and 20 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies ruined Dirk Nowitzki’s abbreviated return with an 89-70 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Memphis, Tenn.

Nowitzki, Dallas’ leading scorer, returned after missing nine games with a sprained right knee. But he managed only seven points before being ejected in the third quarter.

• Prince, Stuckey spark Pistons: Tayshaun Prince scored 21 points, Rodney Stuckey added 19, and the Detroit Pistons beat the Sacramento Kings 110-106 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

• Bulls top Heat: Derrick Rose scored 34 points and Kyle Korver hit a crucial 3-pointer with 25 seconds left as the Chicago Bulls withstood a stellar performance by Dwyane Wade to beat the Miami Heat 99-96 in Chicago.

Miami, playing without injured LeBron James for a second straight game, lost its third straight despite 33 points from Chicago native Wade.

• Trail Blazers win: LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help guide the Portland Trail Blazers to a 96-89 win over the visiting New Jersey Nets.

Staal lifts Penguins over Bruins

NHL: Jordan Staal scored with 16:35 left in the third period to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Boston 3-2 in Boston and avoid another collapse against the Bruins.

• Tavares hat trick leads Islanders to victory: John Tavares scored three goals for his second NHL hat trick, and Rick DiPietro made 40 saves to help the New York Islanders beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 in Uniondale, N.Y.

Kroell wins men’s World Cup downhill

Miscellany: Klaus Kroell of Austria defeated Swiss veteran Didier Cuche to win the classic World Cup downhill race on the Lauberhorn in Wengen, Switzerland. American Bode Miller was eighth.

• Women’s race canceled: The women’s World Cup giant slalom race in Maribor, Slovenia, was canceled after 25 racers because of warm weather that caused poor course conditions.

It was not immediately clear when or where the race could be rescheduled.

• Maruyama, Appleby share lead: Stuart Appleby finished with three straight birdies to tie Shigeki Maruyama for the lead at 10-under-par 130 at the Sony Open golf event in Honolulu, setting up a long 36-hole final round today because rain washed out the opening round.

• Hewitt wins tournament: Lleyton Hewitt defeated Gael Monfils of France 7-5, 6-3 in the final of the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, Austalia, a traditional warmup tennis tournament for the Australian Open.

• Al-Attiyah, Coma win Dakar Rally: Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar claimed his first Dakar Rally title and Marc Coma of Spain won the motorbike event for the third time in Baradero, Argentina.
