Area roundup: NIC’s Neilson, Jones win divisions

The North Idaho Cardinals had a pair of wrestlers win their division and two more finish runner-up at the Clackamas Open tournament Saturday at Oregon City, Ore.

Jesse Neilson finished first in the 174-pound weight class and Jamelle Jones topped the field in the 197-pound division.

Second-place finishers for the Cardinals were Braden Mowry (141) and Jake Mason (165).

Track and field

Washington State Cougars sophomore high jumper Holly Parent and Idaho pole vaulter Jeremy Klas, competing unattached, set meet records at the WSU Open Indoor in Pullman.

Parent broke the high jump record when she cleared a personal-best 6 feet. Former Cougar Diana Pickler held the previous mark of 5-10, set in 2006.

Klas set his record when he cleared 17-1 1/2, breaking the mark of 17-0 3/4 set by former Cougar Tyson Byers (U-Hi) in 2007.
