Time to change

When I heard the news about the senseless attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, I was saddened and shocked, but not surprised. The incredible animosity between the left and the right shown during our most recent election, the call to “action” by conservative talk show hosts and the lack of bipartisan cooperation in our Congress all created an atmosphere where this could happen.

When Sarah Palin targeted congresswoman Giffords’ district with cross hairs on her website, she set the table for mentally unstable zealots to act. Her urging to “reload, not retreat” left no doubt in many of their minds as to a solution. Even after Ms. Palin issued a statement offering prayer and concern for Ms. Giffords’ family, the cross hairs remained on her website.

Maybe this horrible tragedy will open our eyes and promote reconciliation between conservatives and liberals, promote respect for those with differing views and increase cooperation for the common good.
