Unity March to highlight MLK Jr. Day

Events planned for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday include:

MLK Jr. Day School Supplies Drive – “A Day On, Not a Day Off,” with supplies to benefit Cheney grade-school students, sponsored by EWU’s Africana Education. Items needed include backpacks, crayons, colored pencils, blue and black ink pens, glue sticks, No. 2 pencils, boxes of tissues, white notebook paper and new undergarments in various sizes. Collection locations are Africana Education Program in Monroe 204 and at EWU Bookstore. Through Friday. Eastern Washington University, Cheney. (509) 359-2205.

MLK Commemorative Celebration – Today from 5-7 p.m. at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 806 W. Indiana Ave. Guest speaker the Rev. Leslie Braxton of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship in Renton, Wash., will speak on “The Dream: Remember, Celebrate and Act.” Admission is free. Call (509) 838-6581, ext. 101 for information.

Unity March – Annual march through downtown Spokane begins at 10 a.m. Monday at the INB Performing Arts Center, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., and ends at River Park Square for a Community Resource Fair. Call (509) 455-8722 for more information.

Children’s Learning Resource Fair – Monday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the STA Plaza, 701 W. Riverside Ave., first floor. Admission is free. Call (509) 455-8722.

“I Have a Dream” speech – The Rev. Happy Watkins will recite King’s famous speech in an annual event at noon Monday in Providence Holy Family Hospital’s Health Education Center, Room 1. The hospital is located at 5633 N. Lidgerwood St.

“Time With Dr. King” – Lakeisha Jones will perform her monologue expressing gratitude toward King and portraying what she would say to him today about the criminal justice system. Jones, who was Eastern Washington University’s “Ms. Eastern 2010,” will perform her work Tuesday at 1 p.m. in EWU’s JFK Auditorium in Cheney. Admission is free. Call (509) 359-2205 for information.
