Local Triple D destinations unite for discount

Touring the Spokane restaurants featured on the Food Network’s show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives?” Now you can save a five spot at each stop.

The restaurants are working together to offer a package of five $25 gift certificates for $100 – in other words, diners save $25.

Buy the gift certificates at any of the restaurants, which include Chaps, 4235 S. Cheney-Spokane Road; Elk Public House, 1931 W. Pacific Ave.; Hills’ Restaurant and Lounge, 401 W. Main Ave.; Picabu Bistro, 901 W. 14th Ave.; and Waddell’s Pub and Grille, 4318 S. Regal St.

Picabu Bistro is next in the show’s lineup, debuting Monday at 9 p.m. on the Food Network in the episode “Quirky Classics.”

The shows featuring Chaps, The Elk and Hills’ have already aired. Waddell’s is waiting for word on an airdate. Capone’s Pub in Coeur d’Alene also was also featured on the show.

Picabu owner Jane Edwards says they made the restaurant’s potstickers, Cactus Burger and Fire Pasta for the show.

The potstickers are made from scratch down to the wrapper, stuffed with a mixture of chicken, corn, cilantro, garlic, ginger and lime. The dumplings are served with soy sauce-based vinaigrette for dipping.

Edwards expects the hamburger “goo” that tops the Cactus Burger to be prominent in the “Triple D” episode. The sauce is a mixture of sautéed green pepper, roasted red pepper and onions. The “goo” also includes pepperoncini, bacon, Worcestershire sauce, Franks Red Hot and other hot sauces.

The burger is finished with pepperjack cheese, lettuce and tomato … but no cactus.

“I don’t know why it’s called a Cactus Burger, my brother did that,” says Edwards, who opened Picabu with her brother, John Fletcher.

Fieri also noshed on Picabu’s Fire Pasta – fettuccine tossed with sautéed chicken and a creamy, spicy Alfredo sauce and topped with Parmesan cheese and bacon.

Edwards says it was an honor to be on the show, especially since it was loyal customers who nominated the restaurant for Triple D treatment.

Picabu Bistro is offering all the dishes Fieri tasted at half-price on Monday. Call the restaurant for more details, (509) 624-2464.
