Preps roundup: Last-match pin lifts North Central

Cody Kiourkas pinned Tyler Christianson in 1 minute, 43 seconds in the final match Wednesday to give North Central (4-3) a 37-34 Greater Spokane League wrestling win at Rogers (0-7).

Rogers trailed 31-16 when Dwayne Robinson (285) started the Pirates toward four consecutive wins with a 4-3 triple-overtime win over Heber Martinez.

Elsewhere, Cody Bocook (285) had an escape with 15 seconds left to defeat Drew Sharkey 3-2 as Mead (6-1) rolled to a 50-12 win at Ferris (2-5). At 152, Ferris’ Zach Jensen held off Blaze Newman 3-2. … Class 3A top-ranked Jacob Fry (171) defeated second-ranked Taylor Whetzel 8-4 with two takedowns in the second period to help University (7-0) to a 46-18 win over visiting Mt. Spokane (4-3). U-Hi will host Mead tonight. … Central Valley (7-0) had six pins, including three in the first period, during a 70-9 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (0-7). G-Prep’s Kevin Kuhn (125) rallied and held off Roger Urlich 6-5. … Justin Miller (171) fought off Tanner Thomas’ takedown with a reversal and first-period pin to help Shadle Park (3-4) to a 44-26 win at Lewis and Clark (2-5).

• Randy Sloan pinned Matt Siebe with 5 seconds left in a 135-pound match tied at 11 as West Valley (2-2 Great Northern League) posted a 61-18 win at Pullman (0-4). WV’s Shane Morgan (130) pinned Jake Staniszewski while trailing 8-2.


Cadie Pratt had her highest scores of the season, winning the balance beam (9.15 points), floor exercise (9.45) and vault (9.1) on the way to the all-around title (36.8) while leading host Mead (166.4) to the team title during a five-team Greater Spokane League meet. Mead and University will settle the GSL title next week.

Boys basketball

Eric Cooper scored eight of his 17 points in the first quarter and Hunter Arno added 12 points and eight rebounds as host Lakeland (3-12) defeated Timberlake 57-32 in nonleague play at Rathdrum. Brian Cronnelly led the Tigers (2-12) with 16 points and eight rebounds.

• Ryan Sample scored a career-high 20 points and Louie Bluff added 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead Cusick (11-4, 10-0 Panorama League) to a 60-31 win over visiting Curlew (6-8, 3-6). Tyler Edwards chipped in 12 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals for the Panthers, who won their eighth straight.

Girls basketball

Caytlin Nenema had nine rebounds and four assists and host Cusick (4-8, 3-5 Panorama League) held on for a 39-33 win over Curlew (5-9, 2-6). Cusick’s Dakota Littlecrow held Curlew’s leading scorer, Chanel Somday, to no field goals.
