Pirates sail past Pacific

Taylor LaMoreaux scored a game-high 16 points and added four rebounds as Whitworth (9-8, 5-3) went on a 19-4 run to start the second half to beat Pacific (5-11, 1-6) 74-52 in a Northwest Conference women’s basketball game Friday in Spokane.

The Pirates trailed 28-25 with 3:20 left to play in the first half, but they ended the frame on a 14-5 run, punctuated by a 3-pointer from Lexi Belcher, who scored 13 points off the bench.

The win for Whitworth was its third straight after the Pirates started NWC play 2-3. The Pirates shot 46.4 percent from 3-point range in the game, and forced 29 turnovers by the Boxers.

• Brooke Randall finished with 24 points and eight rebounds, Korrie Bourn added 19 points and eight boards and Community Colleges of Spokane (14-2, 4-0), built a 19-point lead at the end of the first half and cruised to the 77-56 win over Treasure Valley CC (3-11, 0-4) in NWACC East action at Spokane Community College.

CCS built its lead to as high as 28 points in the second half as the Sasquatch shot 42.6 percent from the floor for the game, while forcing 27 turnovers by TVCC.

Men’s basketball

Marlowe Brien notched 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and four players scored in double figures as Community Colleges of Spokane (11-5, 3-1) built a 20-point halftime lead, beating Treasure Valley CC (4-9, 0-4) 84-58 at SCC.

Preston Wynne hit five 3-pointers for his 15 points and Chaz Johnson added 11 points and six assists for the Sasquatch, who saw their lead balloon to 35 points late in the second half. They shot 63.3 percent from the floor in the first half and finished at 53.3 percent for the game against the Chukars.

Wrestling

Jamelle Jones (197 pounds) and Matthew Foxworthy (285 pounds) won back-to-back matches for nine straight points to help push North Idaho (11-1) to a 26-14 victory over visiting Simon Fraser.

Jones earned a pin of Manvir Sahota in 2:55 to put the Cardinals up by eight, before Foxworthy took a 7-2 decision in the final match to secure the win.

Track and field

Angela Jensen won the women’s pentathlon with 3,543 points and Stephen Scott-Ellis took first in the long jump with a distance of 24 feet, ¾ inches for host Washington State at the Cougar Indoor Invitational in Pullman.

After one day, WSU’s Sean Harris leads the men’s heptathlon with 2,928 points. The meet continues today at 9 a.m.
