Bulls outshine Howard’s big night in win

NBA: Derrick Rose scored 22 points despite two painful stomach ulcers, Luol Deng added 26, and the Chicago Bulls beat Dwight Howard and the visiting Orlando Magic 99-90 on Friday night.

The Bulls won for the ninth time in 11 games even though Howard had a season-high 40 points, taking the lead with a big third quarter and holding off a late push by Orlando.

Deng had 14 in the third quarter as the Bulls doubled up the Magic 34-17, turning a five-point halftime deficit into an 80-68 lead.

• Thunder add to Wizards’ road woes in two OTs: Kevin Durant scored 10 of his 40 points in the second overtime, Russell Westbrook added his third triple-double of the season and the host Oklahoma City Thunder kept the Washington Wizards winless on the road with a 124-117 victory.

Nick Young scored 32 points for Washington but missed a potential winner at the end of the first overtime.

• Cousins, Kings stun Lakers: DeMarcus Cousins had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Omri Casspi added 20 points and the Sacramento Kings snapped an eight-game losing streak to the host Los Angeles Lakers with a stunning 100-95 victory.

Kobe Bryant passed Hakeem Olajuwon for eighth place on the NBA’s career scoring list while scoring 21 of his 38 points in the first quarter.

• Gortat’s career game powers Suns past Celtics: Marcin Gortat had career highs of 19 points and 17 rebounds, Vince Carter added 17 points and the host Phoenix Suns ran over the weary Boston Celtics 88-71.

Kevin Garnett had 18 points and nine rebounds, but was ejected in the fourth quarter after a below-the-belt shot on Channing Frye.

• Grizzlies use big rally to top 76ers: Rudy Gay scored 16 points and put Memphis ahead for good with a 6-footer in traffic, helping the Memphis Grizzlies rally from a 21-point deficit and beat the host Philadelphia 76ers 99-94.

The Grizzlies trailed by 21 in the third quarter and were down 16 entering the fourth. Gay helped the Grizzlies take over down the stretch. He threw down a thunderous dunk and then hit the contested jumper to make it 87-85.

• Maggette, Bucks top Raptors in OT: Corey Maggette hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer in the final minute of overtime and the Milwaukee Bucks beat Toronto 116-110, handing the Raptors their 10th straight loss.

Maggette had 29 points and 11 rebounds, and Andrew Bogut scored six of his 24 points in overtime as the Bucks won their second straight and fourth in six games.

Amir Johnson scored a season-high 24 points and added 12 rebounds for Toronto.

• Jackson, Bobcats rally past Warriors in OT: Stephen Jackson scored 31 points, including a tying 3-pointer in the final second of regulation, and the Charlotte Bobcats rallied for 121-113 overtime victory against the Golden State Warriors in Oakland, Calif.

Stephen Curry had 27 points, and Monta Ellis scored 21 for a Warriors team that blew a 16-point lead to lose.

• Johnson, Hawks hold off visiting Knicks: Joe Johnson scored 34 points and the Atlanta Hawks turned back New York’s late comeback to beat the visiting Knicks 111-102.

The Hawks led by 24 points in the third quarter before surviving a late scare. Amare Stoudemire led the Knicks with 27 points, including a basket to cut Atlanta’s lead to 102-97 with 4:05 remaining.

Hospital releases five Iowa football players

College football: Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said five of the 13 players hospitalized in Iowa City, Iowa, this week with a muscle disorder following grueling offseason workouts are being discharged.

Ferentz said in a statement that he’s looking forward to the release of the eight remaining players “in the days ahead.”

The coach hasn’t spoken to reporters since the school announced Tuesday that the players had been hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, a stress-induced syndrome that can damage cells and cause kidney problems.

University leaders said they have ordered an investigation into how the players wound up in the hospital, and that the hospitalizations were “a cause for grave concern.”

Bradley tops Abbott in short program

Figure skating: Three months after deciding to put retirement on hold at the request of fans, Ryan Bradley won the men’s short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Bradley’s flawless and fabulously entertaining program to “Bugle Boy from Company B” earned him 80.39 points, putting him exactly two points ahead of two-time defending champion Jeremy Abbott. Brandon Mroz is a distant third going into Sunday afternoon’s free skate.

Haas seizes lead; big names close behind

Golf: Bill Haas made eight birdies on the South Course of Torrey Pines for a 6-under-par 66, giving him a two-shot lead over Anthony Kim going into the weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Phil Mickelson shot a 3-under 69 on the North Course. He was joined at 8 under by defending champion Ben Crane and John Daly.

Tiger Woods managed to stay in the game, shooting a 69 to finish the round five shots behind – but with only 11 players ahead of him.

Alex Prugh (Ferris) shot a 2-over 74 on the South Course for a two-day total of 5-under 139, dropping him from a tie for second to 17th place.
