The Central Valley School Board approved education specifications and building standards for upcoming renovations and expansions in the district’s buildings should voters support a construction bond on the ballot Feb. 8.

Jay Rowell, assistant superintendent of human resources and operations, told the board on Monday the prototypical elementary school would have three classrooms per grade level, including kindergarten, a commons or cafeteria space separate from the gym, specialty rooms for music, resources, a community room/art room, a library and others.

He explained what each classroom would have as far as square footage, showed them concept drawings of the rooms and said classrooms would have extra storage and wall space for the elementary classrooms.

“We need to have a large amount of wall space,” Rowell said. The space in elementary rooms would be used for wall charts, calendars and other items teachers post.

There will also be carpeted areas where the children can gather for story time.

The music rooms would be behind the stage in the commons area to be used as part of the stage if needed. In the commons a back wall can be moved for extra audience space in the gym.

The commons alone could sit around 300 people, and if the wall was moved to expand the space into the gym, there would be capacity for 700 people.

“It’s a space we don’t have in all of our elementaries,” Rowell said of the current buildings.

Another building standard would be an entryway that includes a window to the office before visitors reach a second door. The staff can check in visitors before they enter the building.

In the middle schools, each classroom will be 900 square feet, the science rooms will be 965 square feet. The community/art room will have 1,250 square feet, the library 4,500 square feet, and there will be two gyms and three music rooms.

The prototypical middle school will be 111,164 square feet..

The board received other specifications such as what kind of wood, fasteners and doors will be used.

The board passed the plans unanimously.
