NIC wrestlers romp

Jeremy Bommarito (157 pounds) started a run of six straight victories with an 11-6 decision against Scott Verner and the North Idaho wrestling team dominated Western Wyoming 40-9 on the first day of the Northwest Wyoming Duals on Friday in Powell, Wyo.

Bommarito gave the Cardinals a 12-9 lead, then freshman Jake Mason extended the lead to nine with a pin of WWC’s Dylan Bushby in 3:58 at the 165-pound classification.

Jesse Nielsen (174) and Justin Korthuis (184) had technical falls for NIC.

Track and field

Washington State’s Hilary Moore cleared 11-feet, 11¾ inches to finish third in the women’s pole vault at the University of Washington Indoor in Seattle.

In the men’s pole vault, John Breneson (15-9) and Jake Baertlein (15-5) finished second and third to lead the Cougars.

Dylan Watts finished in fifth in the event for Idaho, recording a height of 15-1.

The pole vault was the only event under way Friday night.

Competition will continue today at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.

Hockey

Nelson 6, Spokane 4: Spokane native Joel Stewart scored a pair of goals against his former team to help lead the Leafs (24-17-0-3) to a win over the host Braves (18-23-1-2) in KIJHL action at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
