New Mexico State completes season sweep of Vandals men

Idaho shooting cools off in second half

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Gordo Castillo scored 19 points and New Mexico State defeated Idaho 73-65 in men’s basketball on Saturday night.

Castillo was 5 of 8 from 3-point range as the Aggies (12-11, 6-3 Western Athletic) completed the regular-season sweep of UI.

Aggies forward Troy Gillenwater scored 16 points and center Hamidu Rahman added 11.

Both teams shot 49 percent from the floor, but Idaho (12-9, 5-4) was 34.6 percent in the second half while New Mexico State was 47.8 percent in the second half. The Aggies scored 25 points off 24 Idaho turnovers.

Idaho guard Jeff Ledbetter led the Vandals with 17 points, making 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Deremy Geiger scored 15, Kyle Barone had 12 and Landon Tatum 10.

“Tonight, we were ready to go, and we played extremely hard,” Idaho head coach Don Verlin said. “We did a lot of really, really good things, we just didn’t play smart. We got a little sloppy with the ball a few times and had a few defensive lapses.”

Castillo hit three 3-pointers during a 12-3 New Mexico State run that put the Aggies ahead by seven with 7:56 to play. The first of the three gave the Aggies their first lead since an 8-6 advantage with 16:06 left in the first half.

Idaho tied the game twice before Tshilidzi Nephawe put New Mexico State ahead for good with a bucket as the shot clock expired with 3:46 to play.

The Aggies pushed the lead back to seven on a pair of Gillenwater free throws with 2:03 to play. Ledbetter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull Idaho to within three with 1:11 left, but New Mexico State closed the game 9 for 10 from the foul line in the last 1:25.

“What we’ve got to do is get back home, get rested after this long trip, and get ourselves mentally focused,” Verlin said.
