Winter temperatures returned to the Inland Northwest overnight, and forecasters said they expect the arctic cold to continue through much of the week.

At 7 a.m., it was 15 degrees at Spokane International Airport after an arctic front over the weekend opened the door to a cold northerly flow.

The cold air is expected to deepen tonight with a low of 9 degrees expected in downtown Spokane and 6 degrees in Coeur d’Alene.

Three Spokane warming centers for homeless persons are going to be open tonight.

Highs should run in the lower and middle 20s today and Tuesday under sunny skies. The sun continues on Tuesday, although increasing clouds are possible.

Sun is expected through Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures begin to rebound to the upper 20s on Wednesday and the lower to middle 30s by Thursday.

A slight chance of snow enters the forecast on Friday.
