Mariners’ Vargas throws third shutout

Associated Press
Jason Vargas held San Diego to six singles and didn’t allow a runner past second base for his third shutout this season and the Seattle Mariners beat the Padres 6-0 Friday night at Seattle. Vargas (6-5) struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in his fourth career complete game. He is the first pitcher ever to have three shutouts at Safeco Field in the same season. It was the ninth shutout for the Mariners this season while San Diego has been shut out a major-league-leading 13 times. Adam Kennedy had two hits and two RBI while Jack Cust and Carlos Peguero each had a hit and a pair of RBIs. Chase Headley had three of the Padres’ six hits. Since April 29, he has hit .342 to push his season average now to .305. Dustin Moseley (2-8) allowed five runs, though only two were earned, in 4 2-3 innings. Peguero hit a two-run single in the third inning after Moseley walked Jack Cust with the bases loaded. In the fifth, Cust hit an RBI double to make it 5-0. Brendan Ryan opened the scoring with a double in the first that was followed by Kennedy’s RBI single. Kennedy added a run in the sixth on a double of his own off Anthony Bass. The Padres had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Mariners have beaten the Padres in all four meetings this season.
