Staycations more like it
I was incensed by Joe Polowski’s letter (June 27). I am the daughter of a former high school teacher. Aruba? The only foreign country my mother, a teacher of many years, could afford to visit was Canada!
I will admit that I don’t know how much the Spokane teachers make, but when my mother was teaching, the Coeur d’Alene teachers made just enough (with a second income from a spouse) to rear two kids, and not extravagantly. If the teachers aren’t paid enough, the cities don’t have teachers to instruct the kids.
Remember also that many of these teachers also have kids. Perhaps society is now deciding that only kids of people other than teachers deserve to have decent lifestyles?
I also wonder if Joe has seen the expense reports from the school districts themselves. Does he know for certain that the salaries constitute the largest expense? I suspect the school districts have to pay similar rates that we do for energy and consumables.
So, yes, it is for the kids, and not only for the kids whose parents are not teachers.
