Out & About: Butterfly conference welcomes novices
OUTFLUTTER – Youngsters and novices are invited to join the fun at the Washington Butterfly Association’s 12th annual conference, July 15-17, at the Pend Oreille Playhouse in Newport.
The schedule includes:
• Friday evening lecture, “Butterflies and Habitats of Northeast Washington,” by John Baumann and others;
• Saturday field trip;
• Saturday evening keynote address by Jon Shepard, lepidopterist and author of “Butterflies of British Columbia;”
• Sunday half-day field trip.
Preregister for part or all of the conference by Wednesday.

Youths get shot at Turnbull ducks
OUTHUNT – For the second fall since 1937, youngsters can apply for limited permits to participate in a two-day youth waterfowl hunt at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will restrict the hunters under 16 to about eight hunting sites. The hunters must have state small game and waterfowl licenses.
Two youth hunters accompanied by one or two non-hunting adults will be allowed at each site.
Hunters will be selected in a random drawing. Applications will be accepted Aug. 1-15.
Apply on a U.S. Postal Service postcard. Include the youth’s full name, address and telephone number.

Local paddlers offer kayaking clinics
OUTCLASS – The Spokane Canoe & Kayak Club continues its summer series of paddling clinics this month as follows.
Canoeing moving water, Saturday and next Sunday, for solo or tandem boats on a local river.
Sea kayaking, July 13 evening indoor class followed by July 16-17 session at Medical Lake, for beginners as well as seasoned paddlers.
Whitewater kayaking, July 16-17 on Spokane River.
• Cost for all clinics: $55 per person per class, plus $20 club membership.

Cascades host grizzly
OUTCAST – U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service experts confirmed Friday that a bear photographed by a hiker in North Cascades National Park in October was a grizzly bear – the first confirmed sighting there in half a century.
