Connect to power

The reality in the letter “Try envisioning reality” (June 30) is that we need to stop listening to misinformation and fear-mongering. It’s all about misdirection so we never understand the full truth of the community we live in.

We have a system of law today that completely disempowers local decision-making on issues of importance. We leave that to the state and federal government regardless of the impact to us here in Spokane. Even worse, corporations have evolved into super-citizens overriding communities with government permission and the wealth to back it up.

The reality, here in Spokane, is that we don’t get to decide if we want or don’t want large development in our neighborhoods; we don’t have adequate measures in place to protect the river and aquifer, and we don’t have constitutional rights protections in the private workplace.

We need to stop listening to the corporate megaphone, understand the facts and stop being so obedient to those who love to chant, “You can’t … .”

The Community Bill of Rights, to be voted on this November, is about putting neighborhoods, the environment and workers over corporate power.
