Kitwara wins Peachtree Road Race

Running: Sammy Kitwara of Kenya has won the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta for the second time.

He sprinted to the finish line of the 6.2-mile race Sunday morning, winning just ahead of fellow Kenyan Mathew Kisorio. Kitwara’s time was 28 minutes, 5 seconds.

The 24-year-old Kitwara also won the Peachtree in 2009. He came in eighth last year.

The top women’s racer was Werknesh Kidane of Ethiopia, who finished in 31:22.

The top U.S. men’s racer was Ben True, his first time in the race. Adriana Nelson was the top U.S. female finisher.

An estimated 60,000 runners crossed the finish line at the end of the annual race through Atlanta’s streets.

Sabres defenseman Weber signs deal

NHL: The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed defenseman Mike Weber to a multiyear contract.

General manager Darcy Regier did not disclose the length or financial terms in announcing the move.

Weber played in 58 games this season and finished with four goals, 13 assists and 17 points, all career highs. He played in all seven games of Buffalo’s first-round playoff series against Philadelphia.

• Oilers grab defenseman Peckham: Theo Peckham has agreed to a one-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

The 23-year-old defenseman was a restricted free agent.

Peckham played in 71 games for Edmonton last season. He had three goals and 10 assists and totaled 198 penalty minutes. He earned $550,000 last season.

• Jets announce five signings: The Winnipeg Jets have signed several free agents, including several with local connections.

Winnipeg native Derek Meech and former Manitoba Moose forward Rick Rypien and defenseman Mark Flood were among the six players signed by the Jets.

The Jets also agreed to terms with defenseman Randy Jones, winger Tanner Glass and center Aaron Gagnon.

Jones signed a $1.15 million, one-year deal to join his fourth team in as many seasons. • Coyotes add Eckford, McElhinney: The Phoenix Coyotes have signed defenseman Tyler Eckford and goalie Curtis McElhinney to one-year contracts.

• Flames re-sign defenseman Babchuk: The Calgary Flames re-signed defenseman Anton Babchuk to a two-year contract extension worth $5 million.

Her Smile captures Prioress Stakes

Her Smile cooked up a holiday treat for celebrity chef Bobby Flay, winning the $250,000 Prioress Stakes at Belmont Park in New York.

Flay’s 3-year-old filly beat Pomeroys Pistol by a half length. The time was 1:09.44 for the six furlongs.

• Celtic Princess wins Hollywood Park: In Inglewood, Calif., Celtic Princess pulled away in the final eighth of a mile to win the $150,000 Royal Heroine Mile by 2 1/4 lengths at Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Celtic Princess ran the distance on the turf in 1:33.74 and paid $5.40, $3 and $2.40 as the 17-10 favorite.

Retired NFL players feel excluded

Miscellany: A group of retired NFL players has filed a complaint against the league and its current players, saying they have been excluded from the negotiation sessions taking place in an attempt to end the lockout.

They are asking U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson to put a halt to the mediation she ordered and allow them to return to the bargaining table.

The complaint also argues that because the current players have disbanded their union it is a violation of antitrust laws to bargain on behalf of the retired players. It accuses the current players and the owners are conspiring to push the retired players to the back burner while they negotiate to maximize their own profits.

• U.S. goalkeeper signed by top German club: U.S. goalkeeper David Yelldell Bayer has been signed by top German team Leverkusen. He had been playing for Duisburg in Germany’s second division.

Leverkusen will play in the Champions League after finishing second last season in the Bundesliga. The club gave no details about Yelldell’s contract.

• IOC approves slopestyle for 2014 Sochi Games: The International Olympic Committee approved the inclusion of men’s and women’s slopestyle events in snowboarding and freestyle skiing for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

In slopestyle, snowboarders and skiers do tricks while going down the mountain and maneuver through “features” – rails, big jumps and bumps.

• WADA teams up with drug maker in doping fight:

The World Anti-Doping Agency has signed a deal with a major drug maker to test for new performance-enhancing substances before they hit the market leading up to the 2012 London Games.

WADA said its “historic partnership” with GlaxoSmithKline PLC meant that medicines being developed by the British company “will be reviewed by GSK scientists specifically to identify substances with a probable or high risk of abuse in sport.”
