Moscow golfer Chris Williams wins at Sahalee

Chris Williams of Moscow, who will be a sophomore at the University of Washington in the fall, won the 18th Sahalee Players Championship golf tournament at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., on Friday, taking an important step in his bid to be selected for the Walker Cup.

He shot a 1-over-par 73 for a four-round total of 287, the only player in the elite field of amateurs who was under par at the end.

Williams, who came into the day with a one-stroke lead, was never headed on the final day.

Incoming UW freshman Cheng-Tsung Pantied for the lead twice during the day, but a bogey on 17 ended his run.  He finished in second at 288 along with Brigham Young University’s Zac Blair.

The Walker Cup, to be held in Scotland in September, pits top amateurs from the U.S. against a European team. The Sahalee win should enhance Williams’ chances of making the team.

“This is a big event and people pay attention to that,” Williams said. “The last two guys to win this won the Hogan Cup and this attracts the best players in the world. They (the USGA) will look at this win and hopefully it will bode well for me.”

Track and field

University of Idaho sophomore-to-be Alycia Butterworth won the 2,000-meter steeplechase at the Canada Junior National Championships with a time of 6 minutes, 46.02 seconds in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
