Responsible bicycling

In response to the letters from bike riders regarding Stan Wright’s letter of June 19: The main issue isn’t about who pays taxes, or who has rights on the roads. It’s about safety. When bike riders are on a curvy, hilly country road without shoulders, it’s an accident waiting to happen. Without shoulders, the riders can’t get over to the side of the road.

If a car or farm vehicle is going around a corner and a bike rider is in the middle of the road, the outcome is not going to be good. A road without shoulders should be off-limits to bicyclists. There are many scenic roads in the area that have shoulders, or even bike lanes.

Riding a bike on a country road without shoulders is dangerous, not to mention irresponsible, plain and simple.
