Died Former Sounders forward Mark Peterson, a Tacoma native who starred for the original North American Soccer League team, died Thursday night. He was 51. Peterson was 19 when he debuted with the Sounders in 1980. He finished second in NASL Rookie of the Year voting after scoring 14 league goals and played with the team until it folded during the 1983 season.

Mark Whitehead, a member of the U.S. track cycling team that participated in blood doping during the 1984 Summer Olympics, creating a scandal that led to the practice being banned from the sport, has died. He was 50. Whitehead died in Frisco, Texas, while attending the USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships.

Arrested Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was arrested outside Atlanta on a drunken driving charge, sheriff’s official said. The former Super Bowl MVP was booked into the DeKalb (Ill.) County jail at 3:41 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence. A jail official said he was released on $1,300 bond.

Hired WNBA player Teresa Edwards will take over as the interim head coach for the Tulsa Shock following the resignation of Nolan Richardson, the organization announced. Edwards was hired during the offseason as the team’s director of player personnel.

Retired Italian soccer star Fabio Cannavaro announced his retirement, five years to the day after captaining his country to the 2006 World Cup title. The 38-year-old Cannavaro said medical checkups in Italy in June and this month revealed his right knee would not hold up for the second and last year of his contract with Dubai club Al Alhi.

Injured Jockey Patrick Valenzuela took off his mounts at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif., after being hurt when his horse unseated him a night earlier. Valenzuela was aboard Sunburn in Friday night’s fourth race, but she stumbled badly shortly after the start and unseated him. He was taken to a nearby hospital after complaining of hip, leg and left shoulder pain, but X-rays were negative and he was later released.
