Map of this story's location

Ted Nugent is heard loud and clear by millions of people each year, and we’re not even talking about the rock ’n’ roll music assault he’s been making on the ears of his fans for more than 40 years.

The 63-year-old rock guitarist says he devotes all summer to concerts and about 10 months to hunting. Meantime, he takes no time off throughout the year from his favorite sports of “crushing liberals, destroying animal rights, defending Second Amendment rights and exposing the monsters who hold political office.”

He has admirable qualities that attract conservative celebrities to his spotlight.

For example, he honors the military at his concerts and shares hunts with terminally ill kids.

“Tom Petty’s music is drug induced,” he said. “I’ve been straight and sober all my life. My musical spirit comes from nature.”

But even some gun rights activists cringe at his rock-star language, blood lust and some of his shamelessly outrageous stands.

His aversion to compromise seems to divide hunters into different camps.

“If you’re divisive with me, you’re wrong,” he said.

Yet his celebrity and gift for gab is a force to be reckoned with. Read on as The Nuge answers our questions about himself, hunting, politics and the American way.

I guess I am wrong Ted (your quote: “If you’re divisive with me, you’re wrong,”)!

How about another one of your quotes; “I’m stymied to come up with anything funnier than people who think animals have rights. Just stick an arrow through their lungs.”

hmmm…… Here’s one of my quotes Ted (I’m just making it up on the fly), I’m sick and tired of closed minded rednecks telling me how to behave!

• lewis8457 on July 10 at 8:36 a.m.

Give Ted a running start and let a grizzly bear have him for dinner, Ted is a waste of space.

• ZagChuck on July 10 at 8:40 a.m.

“I’m sick and tired of closed minded rednecks telling me how to behave!”

But closed minded liberals who demand we adhere to their ideology.. .they’re all okay right WB?

Perhapos later we can discuss how moronic liberals hypocritically demand an end to the use of labels, but always seem to be comfortable trying to make derogative labels out of words like “redneck.” Such narrow-mindedness is astounding.

But you should know Uncle Ted’s not a redneck; he’s just a guy from Detroit who loves to hunt.

• leekinny on July 10 at 8:40 a.m.

Nugent does have diarrhea of the mouth. I still like his old stuff. What goes on between his ears is disturbing.

• Albert on July 10 at 8:49 a.m.

Good morning all…why must we lower ourselves to even provide a comment on this??? All we do is add to the incivility and primeval mentality of both the performer, the reporter, and the SR who feels this article would stir up trouble. Give it up, don’t allow yourselves to wallow in the sewer, and move on. This fellow is of no value, consequence, and promotes his income with his insults. Don’t go there.

A very intolerant and homophobic person, makes me ashamed to hail from Michigan, don’t judge us by one of our worst specimens.

• nslopeofw on July 10 at 8:59 a.m.

Uncle Ted Rocks!! He believes in what he spouts, and tells it like he thinks. Imagine if our politicians did that. No swinging with the tides of the issues, just good ole fashioned honesty!!

Keep on rockin’, Ted!

• leekinny on July 10 at 9:05 a.m.

I wonder if my above post will get flagged. I’m tempted to do it myself. That’s Ted. That’s who he is.

• The_Seer on July 10 at 9:15 a.m.

I met the Motor City Madman as a high schooler here in Spokane at the Mushroom Records on Riverside, located in an old building that has since been demolished. Mayor Ron Bair was on hand to grant Nuge the key to the city and I had him sign a coat I wore to concerts for just that purpose. It was the “Wango Tango” tour, the one where Ted arrived on stage in a loincloth swinging from a vine out over the audience. When he went to sign my coat I stated I was gonna be right up front and he told me “then I’ll be right on f’ing top of ya!” He prepared to sign his name next to Freddy Mercury’s, then flipped the coat over to find another spot. He handed me back the coat and leaned in to tell me “you shouldn’t let fruits sign that coat with all those legends on it…”

I still went to the show, but mainly to see a “new” group that was opening for Nuge called The Scorpions. I guess if Ted has a single remaining redeeming quality it’s his consistency.

• empyrius on July 10 at 9:16 a.m.

• wbwhitney on July 10 at 9:26 a.m.

Hello ZagChuck!
uh, don’t you realize that ‘Ted’ is a self-described ‘redneck’, I’m just using his words.
BTW, I and my family are self described Conservatives (conservatives don’t have to be rednecks). We conserve our money, conserve our family, and most importantly conserve our environment (including animals). I’m just not for extremes; things are not necessarily as black and white as people want to ‘shout out’.
Our family loves God, a clean environment, and even the gays and all other minorities! We’re all God’s creatures!
…even the Animals and Rednecks!
Love ‘em All (I just wouldn’t let our dog skip and/or a redneck tell me what to do unless it’s to let them out to use the bathroom!).

• Diana on July 10 at 9:27 a.m.

ZagChick, your comment is (unintentionally) hilarious.

• wbwhitney on July 10 at 9:32 a.m.

NSlopeOfW…..
Having conviction is a great thing, but if it’s based on hate….uh…..and maybe even a narrow view of the world….uh…maybe it’s not so great.
Didn’t Osama have convictions? Let me hear you say that his heart was in the right place.
I believe that he (Osama) honestly believed what he was doing was right, but at the same time I CERTAINLY agree with you that the ‘politicians’ need to have a few more cojones!

• idahocity on July 10 at 9:41 a.m.

i’d rather go hunting with ted than cheney.

• ZagChuck on July 10 at 9:50 a.m.

Wb,

I conserve animals as well… Usually in the freezer, but sometimes in the form of jerky. Conserving wildlife populations often means they must be managed; and hunting is a great way to do that. Otherwise we wind up with an overpopulation, making the entire herd/flock/gaggle etc… unhealthy. It’s the natural cycle of life, especially when done archery style.

I’m not just saying meat is tasty, though that’s clearly true. I’m saying animals don’t have “rights” like humans do, and “conserving” doesn’t mean they can’t be hunted….

• The_Seer on July 10 at 9:56 a.m.

Aren’t humans animals?

• greenlibertarian on July 10 at 10:00 a.m.

The idiots who like the Nudge don’t even know he was a draft-dodging freak.

Morons.

• wbwhitney on July 10 at 10:13 a.m.

I’m with ya on the meat thing ZaChuck, we don’t hunt but we DEFINITELY don’t eat store bought meat as well as not eating produce that is not organically grown (I would hunt what I eat but I’m not in the right location for that).
I also certainly agree with you on animal population control in the form of hunting; not a prob.
When I spoke in regards to Ted, it was because of his ‘black and white’ views on social issues. Certainly living in the forest is great but it also keeps you alienated from the actual workings of the rest of the planet.
Teds mis-guided if only because of his lack of interest in others that are different from himself.
I have a gut feeling that you and I are different on many accounts but that certainly doesn’t keep us from understanding each other! Have a great day!
Walt

Hmmmm……..let’s just go to his own quote from one of the 2 related stories from the Spokesman…

Q.If you had to choose venison for your last meal on earth,

how would you prepare it?

A. I get to do control work on various airports, and you haven’t eaten until you’ve tasted a freshly skinned fawn. That’s some good food. The cuter the critter, the sweeter the meat.

In case you missed any other delicious quotes from Terrible Ted…here are the links to the current Spokesman Review articles………

Let’s see…”disgusting”, “loser”, “jerk”, “idiots”, “freaks”, “morons”…

I’m getting the impression that some folks don’t like Ted Nugent, though I’m not really clear on why. I’m glad to hear he’s still alive. I liked “Stranglehold” when I was in high school. Or was that Alice Cooper? I get them mixed up. Who did “School’s Out”? And didn’t one of them do “Free For All”? Or was that the name of the record. God, it was a long time ago.

• jddavis on July 10 at 11:44 a.m.

Here’s why Red—

“Since the early 1990s Nugent has become both popular and criticized for his conservative beliefs and his anti-drug and anti-alcohol stances. He is a national spokesman for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, advocating the “natural highs” to be found in an outdoor lifestyle.” (Wiki)

Wang Dang!

leekinny, good link that reveals Ted’s hateful, hypocritical nature.

Funny how Ted defends the 2nd amendment, but apparently resents everyone’s rights as secured in the 1st amendment.

This guy is a dumbass.

• liberal_in_right_wing_land on July 10 at 12:30 p.m.

RedCedar, people don’t like him because he hates everyone who isn’t white, religious and straight. He has said truly hateful and disgusting things about blacks, gays, asians, women and hispanics. Just click on some of the links people have posted above.

Also, people don’t hate him because he is conservative and religious jddavis, they hate him because he has made it VERY clear he hates everyone besides himself and has said some truly vile things against every minority group around.

• meadman on July 10 at 12:47 p.m.

Nugent is the old, male, semi-musically-talented, bigoted, has-been version of Sarah Palin. To keep your name in the media you MUST be extreme and pander to those who don’t think too critically……

• Johnnyej on July 10 at 12:49 p.m.

The “Nuge” yea baby. The most creative draft dodger around. Finally he admitted it a few years ago. He ate nothing but cheese burgers and drank cola for a few weeks before his induction during the Vietnam war, and this truly great conservative American then didn’t use the toilet or any form of hygene for a week. This great conservative then went to his draft office and was designated 4f for his stink and metal stability. Repulsive in everyway, the chicken hawk for the ages. Great American, and the ultimate hypocrite. It’s public record so he had to “come clean” a few years ago. ZZZZWango ZZZZTango. Why is it the righteous are always the worst offenders?

• RedCedar on July 10 at 1:08 p.m.

he hates everyone who isn’t white, religious and straight.
So says you. On another topic, you said I was a “teabagger” (i.e. Tea Party member), which is every bit as true as saying that I belong to Mensa, the Council on Foreign Relations, the board of directors of Greenpeace, the Elks Lodge, the John Birch Society, and the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Which is to say, not true at all. So, rather than accepting your word as to what is in another man’s heart (hate) and what inspires that feeling within him (dark-skinned, unchurched, and queer people), I’ll reserve judgment until someone quotes him as saying such. And, yes, I’m still too lazy to follow links all over the Internet.

Ted Nugent celebrates truth and logic with a delivery that is fun, exhilarating and uniquely NUGE. That it makes his critics and the weak of heart do back flips and spit up on themselves only adds to the absolute enjoyment of it all.

WB Whitney-

Yeah, Osama had convictions, but his included killing everyone who didnt believe as he did. uncle Ted just tells em what he thinks. Its the animals he kills. He also eats that which he hunts.

I dont kill animals anymore. Not because its wrong, just because i can get what i need at the store. If i lived somewhere where there were few stores, then i’d hunt.

• nslopeofw on July 10 at 2:43 p.m.

Ted was given a Y1 (student deferment) for Vietnam. If that is draft dodging, then everyone in college in the 60’s was a draft dodger.

He did once give an interview in the 60’s to high times on how to evade the draft, but he himself never used any of those idea’s.

• richl on July 10 at 3:44 p.m.

During our interview, I asked Nugent if it were true that Spokane Mayor Ron Bair gave him the key to the city during a concert visit in the 70s.
The Nuge said, “Yes it is.”
Then I asked, “Do you still have it?”
He said, “No I don’t — it didn’t open anything.”

• orthsix on July 10 at 4:00 p.m.

I have a good snicker whenever I read his quotes. He’s getting exactly what he intended; a reaction (whether agreement, disagreement, anger, indignation, support, or anything else) from people. I agree with MOST of his viewpoints. I am a hunter and hunter supporter. I also believe that there should be regulations to protect many species. I am extremely conservative, but have to shake my head at times. All that being said….there is no one out there who has it ALL together people. Except for God Himself. Keep it up Ted, thanks for the entertainment!

• greenlibertarian on July 10 at 4:22 p.m.

The nuge is a world-class hypocrite whilst moralizing in an offensive way.

He got a 2-S draft deferment in ‘67 and ‘68, whilst (later) claiming he was doing over 300 shows a year during that period. The draft board finally catches up with his lack of educational progress, they recalssify him 1-A (immediate induction) and in 69 he pulls the disgusting stunt told above where he soils himself in order to get a 4-F (unqualified for military duty).

So somebody else went in, in Nuge’s place. Some other poor SOB went in in ‘67, ‘68, ‘69, etc. Those were some of deadliest years of the war. Any of you Vietnam Vets got buddies who came home in a box those years? Several of my brothers’ closest friends came home in a box.

Numerous musicians who knew him in that period claim he WAS using drugs.

But that’s hardly the worst of for “Family Killin’ Values” Uncle Ted:

The Hypocritical Summer of Ted Nugent

By Debbie Schlussel

Am I the only one who’s sick and tired of the hypocritical ventings and lecturings of Ted Nugent? Am I the only one who sees through this rocker-with-no-clothing? Are conservatives so desperate for a D-list celebrity that they will overlook all to embrace Ted Nugent? Apparently so.

Today’s Wall Street Journal features an op-ed piece by Nugent, who likes to refer to himself as “Uncle Ted.” The piece, “The Summer of Drugs,” is three columns of Nugent bloviation and braggadocio about how he never did drugs on the rock scene in the ’60s and ’70s (a point a lot of bigger name rockers who toured with him dispute) and what a great moral guy he is because he was not like the rest of the ’60s generation.

All fiction, since Nugent–a Draft Dodger–divorced his wife, used his rock star money to gain sole custody of the kids, lived with a teen groupie who raised the kids (he was too busy touring), cheated on his second wife, Shemane, and had a kid outside of wedlock with Karen Gutowski of New Hampshire, with whom he fought against paying child support for years.

**** UPDATE, 02/17/09: That’s in addition to the two other kids Ted Nugent had out of wedlock with two other different women by the time he turned 21. That’s right. Ted Nugent fathered SEVEN kids with FIVE different women, to which only two of whom he was married. ****

It’s hilarious to read “Uncle Ted” Nugent moralizing to us in the Journal, (continues)

It’s too much Nugent saying, “Do as I say, not as I do,” especially since his battle to avoid paying for his illegitimate kid was just two years ago.

*** (Everyone falls for his phony act, though, since Nugent was once named “Father of the Year,” by some ignorant group.)***

{Not everyone, as I said earlier, just the morons.}

(breaking for length)

• greenlibertarian on July 10 at 4:23 p.m.

(continued)

And don’t forget this from the New York Post in 2004:

“Courtney Love phoned into The Howard Stern Show on Monday (March 22) before eventually coming into the studio where she made the shocking allegation that one of the first times she had oral sex was with Ted Nugent. She said she was young and she didn’t want to say exactly how old she was, but eventually confessed she was 12-year-old – which would have made Nugent approximately 28 years old at the time. The New York Post attempted to contact Nugent for a response but was unsuccessful. Moderators at Nugent’s official forum deleted the only thread asking about the topic as evidenced by the forum’s search giving a file not found error for the matched thread. She added it was a long time ago and she didn’t even have breasts yet.”

Ted Nugent also likes to call himself “the Motor City Madman” (he has a lot of bloated, self-important nicknames). But Ted Nugent moralizing to the rest of America as if he’s the opponent–instead of the embodiment–of ’60s morality doesn’t have a thing to do with the Motor City. It’s just plain Mad.

http://www.debbieschlussel.com/1503/the-hypocritical-summer-of-ted-nugent/
:
And until hard-core rap came around, Uncle Ted’s “music” was some of the more offensive towards women and glorifying male conquest and general promiscuity.
:
Musically, his Amboy Dukes stuff was decent, His debut Ted Nugent album was epic, but he went quickly downhill from there, all the way down. He hasn’t had a Gold Album in what, 25 years?

So even though he is the APEX of hypocrisy, because he serves up red meat, morons can’t get enough of it.

But what’s even funnier is that the Nuge knows exactly what he his doing, says so right in the interview:

“Q. If you are so passionate about conservative politics, why don’t you capitalize on your celebrity to seek public office?

A. Believe me,nobody’s capitalized on any resources as effectively as I have capitalized on my celebrity.”

Modern day PT Barnum who knows that many fools and their money are easily and soon parted.
