U.S. Women’s Open cut short by weather

Golf: Mika Miyazato shot 67 to grab the lead at 5-under-par 137 at the halfway point at the U.S. Women’s Open at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday, where rain once again stopped play early and cemented the prospect of a grueling 36-hole finale today.

She had a one-shot lead over Ai Miyazato – who is not related but is from the same city, Okinawa, Japan. When the Miyazatos return to the course, they will play in the final group together, each wearing red and white pins they created to raise awareness for the thousands of victims in a country ravaged by an earthquake, tsunami and the resulting nuclear catastrophe.

Defending champion Paula Creamer and Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.) were in a six-way tie at even-par 142.

• Stricker takes 2-stroke lead in Deere Classic: Steve Stricker assumed a familiar spot atop the John Deere Classic leaderboard, shooting an 8-under 63 to go up by two strokes after three rounds in Silvis, Ill.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett dropped from eighth to 47th after posting a 2-over 73. Alex Prugh (Ferris, University of Washington) is tied for 69th after shooting a 1-over 72.

• Haas takes two-shot lead at Pebble Beach: Jay Haas shot a 7-under 65 and took a two-stroke lead over three other players after two rounds of the First Tee Open in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Haas, who owns 14 Champions Tour titles but is winless since 2009, had seven birdies, including three of the four par-5s, and played bogey free to get to 11-under 133.

Vandersloot leads Sky past Dream

WNBA: Epiphanny Prince scored 24 points, Courtney Vandersloot (Gonzaga) had 16 and nine assists and the Chicago Sky rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat the Atlanta Dream 81-69 in Rosemont, Ill.

Bryans win first point for U.S. against Spain

Tennis: Brothers Bob and Mike Bryan earned the United States its first point of a Davis Cup quarterfinal against Spain, keeping the Americans alive with a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco in Austin, Texas.

Spain leads the Americans 2-1 heading into today’s singles matches pitting David Ferrer against Fish and Lopez against Andy Roddick.

• Isner, Rochus in Hall of Fame final: Top-seeded John Isner will play Olivier Rochus today in the final at the Hall of Fame championship in Newport, R.I.

Isner advanced with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Tobais Kamke. Rochus made it to the championship match by beating qualifier Michael Yani 6-2, 6-4.

McDermott leads U.S. to consolation win

Basketball: Creighton’s Doug McDermott scored 19 points to lead the United States to an 84-47 victory over Poland in the consolation round of FIBA’s Under 19 World Championship in Riga, Latvia.

The U.S. (6-2), which lost to Russia in the quarterfinals, will play Australia (6-2) for fifth place today.

First Dude wins Hollywood Gold Cup

Horse racing: First Dude held off Game On Dude by a nose to win the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup in Inglewood, Calif., giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a 1-2 finish.

With the victory, First Dude earned an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic this fall at Churchill Downs.

First Dude ran 1 1/4 miles under Martin Garcia in 2:01.57 and paid $10.20, $4.80 and $3.20.

Gatlin tops Chambers in 100m at Madrid

Track and field: Justin Gatlin edged Dwain Chambers to win a 100-meter race in Madrid, Spain, notching a confidence-boosting victory ahead of the upcoming world championships.

The former Olympic champion finished in 10.10 seconds running into a headwind to beat Chambers of Britain (10.13) and fellow American Travis Padgett (10.18).

Gatlin, who won Olympic gold in 2004 and world titles in the 100 and 200 one year later, returned last year after being suspended following a second positive drug test.

Bute KO’s Mendy, keeps IBF title

Boxing: Lucian Bute of Canada retained his IBF super middleweight title by knocking out Jean-Paul Mendy of France in the fourth round at the Romexpo in Bucharest, Romania.

Rios retains title: Brandon Rios stopped Urbano Antillon with 11 seconds left in the third round of an action-packed fight at Carson, Calif., retaining his WBA lightweight title.
