In brief: Inspectors found faulty bolts on bridge

From staff and wire reports

DOVER, Idaho – The Idaho Transportation Department says scores of anchor bolts on a $22 million bridge being built on U.S. Highway 2 near Dover, Idaho, have been improperly installed and need to be fixed.

Department spokeswoman Barbara Babic told the Bonner County Daily Bee that between 75 and 100 faulty bolts were detected during an inspection last spring.

The agency made the announcement Friday.

Officials say the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General are investigating because the new bridge is being paid for with money from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act.

The project’s lead contractor, Sletten Construction Co., installed the bolts. The company could face penalties if inspectors find malfeasance.

The alleged victims said they were invited to smoke marijuana at an acquaintance’s apartment about 5 p.m. near Augusta and Madison. They said that’s where Aziem L. Richardson, 19, pulled out a shotgun and robbed them.

Later, the suspect did not respond to police attempts to contact him, so the SWAT team and a police negotiator were dispatched while detectives obtained a search warrant. Richardson then surrendered and was arrested on two counts of first-degree robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.
