Early grand slam sinks Spokane

Spokesman-Review
Everett brought out the Wood during the first inning of Thursday night’s win over the Spokane Indians. James Wood’s grand slam to right-center field highlighted an eight-run first as the AquaSox (11-16) rebounded from Wednesday’s series-opening loss with a 16-9 win over the Indians in Northwest League play at Memorial Stadium. The outcome left Spokane (14-13) tied for first place with Boise and Tri-City in the East Division. Wood, the designated hitter, finished with six RBIs by adding a two-run single in the sixth. The first-inning damage came against Victor Payano (1-3), who allowed four hits, three walks and four earned runs during two-thirds of an inning. Jabari Blash added a solo homer in the first. Spokane fell behind 12-1 before scoring five runs in the fifth. Drew Robinson homered to center to lead off the inning. The rest of the damage came after two outs, on Zachary Cone’s RBI single, Brett Nicholas’ two-run double and Trever Adams’ RBI triple. The Indians added three in the seventh, topped by Guillermo Pimentel’s two-run double to center. Adams finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Third Everett pitcher Tim Griffin (1-0) earned the win, working 11/3 hitless innings. The teams play three more times, starting tonight, before Spokane returns for a six-game homestand, starting with three against Boise.
