1: D. David Thompson, thought to be the first white man to travel the Columbia from its upper reaches to the Pacific, arrived in Astoria in 1811. Astor came by ship and arrived several months earlier. Lewis, Vancouver and Gray all reached the Northwest earlier.

2: C. Murdoch’s company owns New York City’s other tabloid, the Post.

3: E. A 9th Circuit Court panel ordered a “retrospective” hearing to determine if Duncan was competent to waive his appeal of the execution sentence.

4: B. Under Article IV of the U.S. Constitution, the state’s Legislature and Congress must both approve such a split.
