In brief: Motorcyclist dies of crash injuries

A motorcyclist died early Sunday from injuries he sustained in a crash Saturday.

Larry J. Durheim, 58, of Mead, was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center on Saturday after he collided with a car 17 miles north of Spokane on U.S. Highway 2.

Durheim was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound Saturday afternoon when police said he attempted to improperly pass 42-year-old Donna L. Rogers, of Spokane, who was northbound in a Ford Thunderbird.

As Rogers turned west toward Bailey Road, Durheim collided with the Thunderbird in the southbound lane. Rogers was not injured.

Three injured in rollover crash

A Spokane man was airlifted to an area hospital after a rollover crash Saturday that injured two others near Nordman, Idaho.

According to the Idaho State Police, 53-year-old Dale E. Castor, of Spokane, was driving a 1986 Ford F-150 pickup southbound on state Highway 57 at 7:08 p.m. Saturday when he left the roadway, overcorrected and rolled several times.

Passenger Luke A. Conley, 70, was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday. Castor and passenger Connie L. Strode-Castor, 60, also of Spokane, were transported to Newport Hospital, where they were treated and released.

The Idaho State Police said alcohol may have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.

Cantwell touts loan program

SEATTLE – As she helped tap a keg at a Seattle brewery expanding its operations, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell lauded a federal small-business loan program she helped pass through Congress.

The Democratic senator joined Elysian Brewing Co. officials on Sunday as they announced they’re adding 35 new jobs to their new brewery complex in south Seattle.

Elysian Brewing CEO Joe Bisacca said that because of the Small Business Jobs Act, his company had access to the $5 million loan that’s financing the expansion.

The Small Business Jobs Act decreased fees and increased small-business loan guarantee limits from $1.5 million to $5.5 million for some business. It passed Congress last September.

Cantwell said the loans will be a key turnaround for small businesses.

EPA calls cleanup of spill a success

BILLINGS – An official with the Environmental Protection Agency said workers have successfully removed about 100 barrels of oil from a broken Exxon Mobil pipeline in the Yellowstone River in south-central Montana.

Steve Merritt said EPA officials believe the pipe is no in danger of releasing any more oil.

The pipe failed July 1, spewing an estimated 1,000 barrels of crude into the flooding river.

Body believed to be missing girl’s

PORTLAND – The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s office plans to examine today the human remains found in a heavily forested Portland butte over the weekend.

The remains are thought to be that of missing Portland girl Yashanee Vaughn, who was last seen March 19. A 16-year-old boyfriend has been charged with murder in her death.

The district attorney’s office said the discovery of human remains resulted from information provided by the arrested boyfriend.

Authorities allege Parrish Bennette Jr. fatally shot 14-year-old Vaughn and then hid her body. She was reported missing by her mother on March 21.

Bennette has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and first-degree manslaughter with a firearm.
