Baseball notebook: Mets’ Pelfrey not pitching like an ace

Mike Pelfrey is not pitching in the manner expected of a No. 1 starter – and he knows it.

Pelfrey gave up Michael Martinez’s first career homer, a three-run shot, and was outpitched by Kyle Kendrick, who helped lead the Philadelphia Phillies to their seventh straight series win with an 8-5 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.

“I have to go out there and get people out. I have to put up zeros,” Pelfrey said. “Whether if we have the world out there or we didn’t have anybody out there, I have to put up zeros. I have to get outs. That’s my job. I can’t be giving up hits to the pitcher. I can’t be giving up three-run homers. That’s unacceptable.”

After two solid starts in July, he gave up four runs in five innings Sunday. Pelfrey fell to 0-2 with a 9.47 ERA against the Phillies this season.

Mets’ Reyes ready for rehab game

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is going to make a rehabilitation start for Class-A Brooklyn today before he is activated from the disabled list, possibly a day later.

Reyes tested his strained left hamstring by running the bases Sunday before New York lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5. Manager Terry Collins announced the decision after the game.

With general manager Sandy Alderson and Reyes’ agent, Peter Greenberg, looking on, the All-Star ran from home to first, first to third, second to home and home to second.

Leading the majors with a .354 batting average, Reyes has been out since July 3 and is eligible to come off the disabled list today, but the Mets want him to test his leg in a game. Collins apparently wanted Reyes to skip the rehab game but was overruled.

Clearing the bases

Orioles designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken bone in his right hand. … Right-hander Scott Baker told the Minnesota Twins he wouldn’t be able to make his scheduled start in the series opener. The Twins placed Baker on the disabled list with an elbow strain,sending them into another scramble in what has been a season full of injuries.
