Rejecting literalists

If biblical literalists truly followed the teachings of the Bible as Ruth Russell and her letter (July 8 – “Clergy defy Bible”) suggests, the church would continue to deny rights to citizens of the United States and they would have divine authority to execute homosexuals.

Quoting Leviticus 20:13 in the King James Bible, “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.”

It may be that temperate Christians reject this, but Christian Reconstructionists and Presuppositionalists defend it. Let us not forget God’s brutality directed toward the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites (Deuteronomy 20:10-18).

It’s a relief that the United States of America has laws that prohibit religious organizations from interfering with constitutional matters, but the struggle to keep theocratic rule out of our government continues.
