2: B. NASA announced Monday that Dawn was in orbit around asteroid Vesta after a 1.7-billion-mile journey. It will study the asteroid for a year, then in 2015 is scheduled to encounter dwarf planet Ceres. Magellan orbited and mapped Venus in the 1990s. Phoenix confirmed the presence of water ice near Mars’ north pole in 2008.

3: D. According to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the mine’s current owners plan to do a prefeasibility study to determine the cost of putting the mine back into operation.

4: D. Arizona has experienced at least two such storms this month. The term comes from an Arabic word meaning strong wind or phenomenon.

5: D. The whitebark pine and the Clark’s nutcracker have evolved to be dependent on each other, the bird on the tree for food and the tree on the bird for seed dispersal. Clark’s nutcrackers bury caches of seeds throughout the forest to feed themselves and their young in the spring and summer months. Some of the seeds they don’t use germinate, growing into new trees.
