Three players lead at Senior British Open

Golf: Mark Calcavecchia surrendered a three-shot cushion to end the third round of the Senior British Open on Saturday tied for the lead with fellow American Russ Cochran and South Africa’s David Frost.

Calcavecchia, the co-leader after the first and second rounds at Walton Heath in Walton on the Hill, England, was in cruise control at 10 under with six holes remaining before imploding when his accuracy off the tee deserted him.

A disastrous triple-bogey 7 at No. 13 – after driving into the heather beside the fairway – was followed by another dropped shot on No. 16.

Calcavecchia shot 72 to put him at 7-under 209. Frost shot a bogey-free 66, tied for lowest round of the week, while Cochran’s 67 included a double-bogey 6 on No. 14.

Three-time winner Tom Watson was three strokes behind after a 69.

Van Pelt takes Canadian Open lead: Bo Van Pelt birdied four of his last five holes, including the final two, to finish with a 65 and a one stroke lead after three rounds at the RBC Canadian Open in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Canadian Adam Hadwin, playing on a sponsor’s exemption, missed a 12-foot birdie putt on 18 to finish with a 68, and alone in second at 4-under 206.

Miyazato takes two-shot lead at Evian Masters: Former champion Ai Miyazato of Japan shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-shot lead after the third round at the Evian Masters in Evian Les-Bains, France.

Miyazato, who won her first LPGA title at the Evian Masters two years ago, made five birdies for a 13-under total of 203.

Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.) shot a 72 and is tied for 48th at even par.

Spieth earns U.S. Junior Amateur Championship: Jordan Spieth of Dallas closed out his junior golf career in dominating fashion, winning the 64th annual U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in a 6-and-5 runaway at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

After beating Chelso Barrett, 16, of Keene, N.H., Spieth enters the USGA record book as only the second player to win this title multiple times.

Tiger Woods won it three straight times, from 1991 to 1993.

Thailand’s Jutanugarn takes title: Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand won the 63rd U.S. Girls Junior championship, scoring a 2 and 1 victory over Dottie Ardina of the Philippines at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Simon, Almagro in German Open final

Tennis: Gilles Simon of France rallied to beat Mikhail Youznhy of Russia 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in Hamburg, Germany, to set up a German Open final against Nicolas Almagro.

Almagro defeated fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-1. Almagro is looking for his fourth title of the year.

Zvonareva advances to Baku Cup final: Vera Zvonareva defeated Ukraine’s Mariya Koryttseva 6-1, 6-2 to set up an all-Russian final at the Baku Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The top-seeded Zvonareva will take on seventh-seeded Ksenia Pervak today.

It’s Tricky wins feature at Saratoga

Horse racing: It’s Tricky wore down favored Plum Pretty after a head-to-head battle down the stretch to win the $250,000 Coaching Club American Oaks by three-quarters of a length at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Heat forces Monmouth to postpone thoroughbred card: Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., canceled its thoroughbred racing card for the second straight day because of the record heat that continues to plague the East Coast.

• Acclamation takes Eddie Read Stakes: Acclamation, a 5-year-old from the barn of Donald Warren, won the $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes, a Grade 1 on the turf at Del Mar.

Acclamation and Jeranimo ran 1-2 for the entire 1 1/8 miles, with Acclamation pulling away in the stretch to win in 1:46.99.

Johnson encounters rough first outing

Miscellany: Shawn Johnson’s first competition since the Beijing Olympics was a rough one.

Johnson fell off the balance beam and pitched forward on the landing of her uneven bars routine at the Cover Girl Classic in Chicago, a qualifier for next month’s national championships. She will now wait to see if her petition for nationals is approved.

• Blue Jackets sign Prospal to 1-year deal: The Columbus Blue Jackets signed forward Vinny Prospal to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Blue Jackets were in need of a forward because Kristian Huselius suffered a torn chest muscle and will miss the start of the season.

• Boxing promoter Lewis dies: Butch Lewis, the colorful boxing promoter who worked with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Michael and Leon Spinks, has died. He was 65.

Congo Funeral Home in Wilmington, Del., said it received notification of Lewis’ death but did not have information about how he died.

• Former UCLA center Kraushaar dies: Carl Kraushaar, starting center on coach John Wooden’s first two UCLA teams, has died.

UCLA said in a statement that Kraushaar died of natural causes surrounded by his family in Newport Beach, Calif., on Thursday. He was 84.
