In brief: Australia wins men’s 400 freestyle relay

Swimming: Australia, with former sprint world record holder Eamonn Sullivan swimming the anchor leg, won the 4-x-100 freestyle relay in Shanghai, relegating the United States and Michael Phelps to a bronze in his first appearance at the world championships.

Australia finished in a time of 3 minutes, 11.00 seconds while France, which led the morning qualifiers, took the silver in a time of 3:11.14.

The American team led off by Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, was third in 3:11.96.

Man City beats Galaxy on kicks after 1-1 draw

Soccer: Joe Hart saved A.J. DeLaGarza’s penalty and then scored the winner in the ninth round of a shootout as Manchester City beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 7-6 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in Carson, Calif.

Mario Balotelli was pulled by Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini after he broke in on goal, then turned around and attempted to score by backheeling the ball into the net. City’s chance at a 2-0 lead went wide.

• Uruguay beats Paraguay to win Copa America: In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Diego Forlan scored twice and Uruguay won the Copa America for a record 15th time after beating Paraguay 3-0.

Luis Suarez also scored for Uruguay, which followed up a fourth-place finish at the 2010 World Cup by winning South America’s championship for the first time since 1995.

Fish beats Isner for second Atlanta title

Tennis: In Norcross, Ga., Mardy Fish beat John Isner in the final for the second straight year at the Atlanta Tennis Championships, earning a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory.

Fish, ranked No. 9 in the world, held off two straight match points in the second set to rally from a 5-1 deficit in the tiebreak. Isner was trying to win consecutive events for the first time in his career just as Fish did in 2010 at Newport and Atlanta.

• Simon beats Almagro to win German Open: In Hamburg, Germany, Gilles Simon became the first Frenchman in 25 years to win the German Open, beating Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

• Zvonareva tops compatriot Pervak to win Baku Cup: In Baku, Azerbaijan, Vera Zvonareva won her second title of the year, beating Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-4 in an all-Russian final at the Baku Cup.

Outburst lifts U.S. to World Cup title game

Softball: Stacy May-Johnson hit a grand slam and Christi Orgeron had a three-run double in a 10-run fourth inning, and the United States advanced to the World Cup of Softball championship game by beating Great Britain 10-0 in Oklahoma City.

Orgeron broke a scoreless tie with a double that hopped to the wall in left field and cleared the bases, and the Americans (4-1) didn’t let up until the game had ended because of the mercy rule

Whitney Canion (2-0) allowed only two singles by Laura Thompson to get the win.

The U.S. will face 2008 Olympic gold medalist Japan tonight.
