Accepted Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin on Tuesday withdrew an appeal to his extreme drunken-driving conviction, accepting a 30-day jail sentence. Khabibulin had appealed the jail term after being sentenced in August last year. But his Phoenix attorney, Mark DuBiel, said that Khabibulin wanted to drop the appeal because the case likely would have prevented him from going to the Oilers’ training camp and could have lasted into the season.

Suspended South Carolina assistant G.A. Mangus was suspended by Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier after being arrested in Greenville, S.C. The third-year quarterbacks coach was charged with nuisance conduct after officers saw him urinating on a downtown street.

Hired Former NHL coach Andy Murray has been hired by Western Michigan. The school says Murray signed a five-year contract to coach the Broncos. He won 333 games in 10 seasons in the NHL – six with the Los Angeles Kings and four with the St. Louis Blues.

Postponed Cyclist Alberto Contador’s Tour de France doping case was postponed for a second time, and will probably be heard in November. The Court of Arbitration for Sport said the scheduled start Monday was delayed at the request of the World Anti-Doping Agency with “unanimous agreement” of all parties.

Revealed Testing on the brains of four deceased CFL players shows two of them suffered from a neurological disease. Former Toronto Argonaut and Hamilton Tiger-Cat Bobby Kuntz, and Jay Roberts, an Ottawa Rough Rider, had repeated concussions during their careers, and their brains showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
