Backup point guard Winston leaves WSU

By The Spokesman-Review

Dre Winston Jr., a freshman backup point guard who played sparingly in 26 games last season, is leaving Washington State University, the school announced Friday.

Winston, the 3A co-player of the year as a senior at Lakes High, originally signed a letter-of-intent with James Madison University. But last spring he asked for and was granted his release and agreed to attend WSU about two weeks later.

In limited time as Reggie Moore’s backup, Winston averaged 6.2 minutes, 0.6 points and 0.3 assists per game. His best game came against Sacramento State, when he scored four points in 21 minutes.

WSU did not name the school to which Winston will transfer. The 6-foot-1, 166-pounder was granted his release from Washington State, so he is eligible for financial aid next season.
