Huskies win four races at IRA national championships

The University of Washington won four races and advanced all five of its boats to the semifinals as the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships began at Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The Huskies earned wins during heats in varsity 8 (5 minutes, 32.25 seconds for 2,000 meters), second varsity 8 (5:44.20), varsity 4 (6:17.28) and open 4 (6:19.23).

Washington finished second to Princeton in freshman 8.

All boats battled blustery tailwinds and whitecaps.

Gonzaga had its highest finish, a fourth place, in freshman 8+ (6:00.44). The Zags are off until Saturday, when they compete in third-level finals.


Gonzaga University freshman Marco Gonzales was named to the Louisville Slugger TPX All-American third team as a pitcher, Collegiate Baseball announced.

Gonzales led the West Coast Conference in wins (11) and strikeouts (90).

Women’s golf

Gonzaga University’s Tai Jade Kliebphipat qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links by shooting a 74 during a sectional at Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma, Calif.

The Publinx starts June 27 at Bandon (Ore.) Dunes Golf Resort.
