Leaf may need radiation therapy

Football: Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf said Thursday he could face radiation treatments if the part of a brain tumor that couldn’t be removed by doctors winds up getting bigger.

Leaf (pictured above) said a California doctor who performed the surgery couldn’t get all of the tumor because parts were wrapped around brain stem nerves that affect swallowing and shoulder movement. Doctors said the tumor was benign.

“We’re going to monitor it and if it starts to grow again then we’re going to have to do a six-week round of radiation,” the former Washington State quarterback said.

Before the tumor was discovered, Leaf said he was upset because he was “dead sober” but still felt like he was “hung over all the time.” Leaf, 35, was addicted to painkillers a few years ago.

He’d run a few miles or work out and feel better. A short time later, he’d “just hit a wall again.”

Vandersloot, Bjorklund make Sky roster

WNBA: The Chicago Sky finalized their roster and former Gonzaga University women’s basketball standout Courtney Vandersloot, the third overall selection in the 2011 WNBA draft, and University High graduate Angie Bjorklund (Tennessee) were two of 11 players to make the final roster.

The Sky played two exhibition games during training camp, and Vandersloot averaged 22.5 minutes, 6.0 points and 5.0 assists per game.

Players gather at UW for workout

NFL: For a few hours, Aaron Curry didn’t feel locked out.

Being around Seattle Seahawks teammates, even a few guys from other NFL teams, provided a bit of normalcy in an otherwise abnormal NFL offseason.

“Workouts like this today are helping me get over the fact we’re not playing football,” Curry said. “It’s just tough without doing it.”

Curry and about 35 or so players gathered inside the University of Washington’s indoor practice facility for a planned, but informal workout. It was spearheaded by Seattle running back Justin Forsett.
