Channeling Ike
Far too many politicians, pundits and voters subscribe to the belief, as referenced by Jim Camden in the May 29 Spin Control, that “the only things in the middle of the road are white lines and road kill.”
In my opinion, that kind of mindset summarizes all that is toxic about our current hyperpartisan politics. I believe we would all be better served by listening to the wisdom of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as follows:
“People talk about the middle of the road as though it were unacceptable. Actually, all human problems, excepting morals, come into the gray areas. Things are not all black and white. There have to be compromises. The middle of the road is all of the usable surface. The extremes, right and left, are in the gutters.”
