Moscow’s Chris Williams qualifies for U.S. Open

Chris Williams is headed to the big time, at least for four days.

Williams, a Moscow High graduate and all-Pac-10 player at the University of Washington, won the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., on Monday.

Williams carded rounds of 70 and 68 to be the low qualifier with a 6-under-par 138 total on the 7,091-yard Gold Mountain layout.

Also among those to qualify on Monday, was former area resident Kirk Triplett, who won the qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Spokane’s Alex Prugh missed the qualifying score by one stroke at Brookside Country Club and The Lakes Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

The United States Golf Association accepted 8,300 entries for the 2011 U.S. Open Championship at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., being held June 16-19, including entries from all of the 65 golfers who are currently fully exempt into the field.
