Record cold reported in Spokane this morning

Spokane’s early morning temperature on Thursday dropped to 39 degrees at 3:20 a.m., breaking a low temperature record that dates back to 1999. The low was recorded at Spokane International Airport and breaks the previous record of 40. Felts Field near Millwood saw a low of 40 along with 0.28 inches of rain during an hour-long storm on Wednesday evening. Sunshine this morning is a good sign that the weather is getting more seasonal with milder overnight temperatures on the way. Partly sunny skies should persist through the day with highs approaching the upper 60s. But the stabilizing influence of higher air pressure is not going to take over completely. More showers are on the way starting Friday and continuing through the weekend. National Weather Service forecasters are calling for continued mild conditions through the weekend with highs near 70 and lows near 50. A 40 percent chance of showers on Friday will give way to lesser chances through the weekend. This late spring weather has a chance of settling down through next week, bringing continuing mild temperatures that will be nearly perfect for late-spring garden planting and growing. Plants that thrive in warm weather can be set out and planted in the ground now. Lakes and rivers continue to run high with flood watches and warnings in effect over much of the region. Recent rain and snow melt from higher elevations continue to keep waterways swollen. At 7 a.m., it was 48 at Spokane International Airport, 45 at Felts Field and Coeur d’Alene, 44 in Deer park and 46 in Pullman.
