North Central quartet breaks state record in 4-mile relay

Four North Central runners teamed up to break their school’s state record in the 4-mile relay at the Portland Track Festival at Lincoln High School on Friday night.

Keith Williams, Vince Hamilton, Andrew Wordell and Casey Adams combined for a time of 17 minutes, 20.77 seconds, breaking the record set by an NC foursome in 2008. The time is also the best in the country this year and No. 15 all time.

University of Washington sophomore Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, halved his two matches during second day action of the Palmer Cup, while Europe took an 8.5-7.5 lead over the United States at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn.

Williams paired with Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki in the morning to conclude foursome play, which was halted after eight holes on Thursday. The American duo rallied to tie Europeans Jeff Karlsson and Robert Karlsson after trailing by one hole late in the match. Williams and Miernicki birdied No. 16 while their European counterparts scored par to knot up the match – a result that would stand.

Williams took on Ignacio Elvira, who just completed his senior year at Texas A&M, and needed to rally from two strokes down after 10 holes to end up tied. Williams squared the match with wins at Nos. 11 and 12. Elvira claimed No. 13 to regain the lead, then Williams won the 15th with par and the two players halved the remaining holes.

Final-round singles matches are today.
